Newcastle’s €80m Benjamin Sesko bid falls short – Leipzig’s demands & Man Utd latest

Another update has arrived in the Benjamin Sesko saga, only this time it’s not quite as encouraging.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Newcastle’s bid worth €80m has ‘fallen short’ of RB Leipzig’s valuation.

He reports that our bid – an initial €75m (£65.5m) up front plus an additional €5m (£4.36m) in potential add-ons – is considered ‘insufficient’ as the Bundesliga club are demanding similar terms, PLUS a sell-on clause.

This indicates that the fee offered is not the major issue, but more the absence of a sell-on clause Leipzig have demanded.

As we know, Newcastle’s pursuit of the Slovenian comes as Liverpool attempts to lure Alexander Isak to Anfield, with the Reds expected to make a record bid for the Swede IF a replacement signs at St James’ Park.

Ornstein reports that Man Utd remain keen on Sesko, as we know, but reveals that the Red Devils are yet to submit a bid of their own.

As for Sesko himself, Ornstein adds that the 6ft 5′ striker remains ‘undecided’ on his next month and is yet to make a firm decision on his future.

This suggests that reports from Slovenia last night were premature, where outlet Delo claimed the forward was set to pick St James’ Park over Old Trafford.

He may still prefer Newcastle – the truth on what he wants is not clear – but first we have to strike a deal with Leipzig, who clearly want a sell-on clause inserted into any deal.

The worry now, aside from Sesko’s preference, is the bidding war Leipzig may be encouraging, with the German’s in a position to push the boundaries knowing both clubs are determined to land the striker.
