Newcastle United official explanation on why no January signings, PSR issues, long-term acceptance

The January transfer window has now closed, Eddie Howe explaining why no new first team signings have arrived, the PSR issues that impacted, as he gives us this official Newcastle United explanation hours after the window ended at 7pm last night (Monday 2 February 2026).

Why Newcastle United didn’t make any first team signings in the 2026 January transfer window

Eddie Howe explaining…

“Financially, it wasn’t possible…there were players that we were looking at for the future, younger players we could develop. Ultimately, it didn’t happen. I didn’t think there was a player coming in that could affect us [for the rest of this season].

“We are working within the financial restrictions that we have and during this window. there was a willingness to spend…but of course, we have to work within the PSR limits. You have to make a decision with what [PSR] room you have, whether you can find the right player that fits.

“We had a short-term need. We had a need for someone to come in and play now, especially defensively. But for those players, it costs money…and there’s a level [of financial cost] attached to their ability that we can’t reach at the moment.”

Players returning from injury

Eddie Howe: “We need our injured players back fit. Until we do that, there is an imbalance, we are certainly stretched defensively. But I am happy with the squad when it is at full strength.”

The Newcastle United Head Coach asked if with the injuries it was a risk not to bring in first team reinforcements in this latest window, especially in defensive positions

“Yes…but we were left with no other option. Every decision we make has a long-term implication. There is no guarantee signing somebody with the funds we had, would have helped us in the short-term anyway. It is what it is and we are used to working in these conditions now. We have only been active in one window out of the last four or five. We are under the financial restrictions and we have to be smart, so we decided to wait until the summer. The decision is that the summer window is a lot easier to recruit, that there are more players are available and better value for money. We had a limited amount of money to use in this [January] window and the right players were not available to help us in the short-term, those options weren’t available to us and we can’t sign players that don’t exist. We have to sign players [that we can sign and that do exist] and we have to work under the conditions we are in. There is a willingness to spend what we can but [at the same time] work within PSR limits.”
