Over the past week, we’ve seen links resurface surrounding Newcastle United’s reported interest in Lille striker Jonathan David.
The Athletic confirmed he’s a player we’ve been tracking as he approaches the final six months of his contract in France, while TBR’s Graeme Bailey claimed that Newcastle scouts were in attendance to watch the Canadian score in a 1-1 draw with Lyon last weekend.
This week, the 24-year-old was back in Champions League action and he impressed once again, scoring the opening goal in Lille’s 1-1 draw with Juventus.
The goal (watch it 1-minute into the highlight clip below) was his 13th of the season in all competitions and his fourth in four Champions League appearances, with this coming after a brace at Atletico Madrid and strike in Lille’s shock 1-0 win over Real Madrid last month.
Should David refuse to sign a new deal at Lille, he could leave on a cut-price fee in January, sign a pre-contract agreement with another club (ahead of a summer move) or have his pick of clubs at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, where he’s currently on course to leave on a free.
He could be the ideal replacement for Callum Wilson, who is also out of contract next summer and in need of replacing. However, his current form and availability on potential bargain fee will have alerted a number of top European sides.
One to watch, it seems, although our hopes of signings the Brooklyn-born forward on a cut-price fee may start to fade if he continues scoring every week!
