The Eredivise in the Netherlands is proving to be a growing hotbed for young talent, and Newcastle may have set their sights on one of the division’s rising stars.
After dazzling for Feyenoord this season, Igor Paixão is reportedly the latest Champions League winger on Paul Mitchell’s transfer radar after suggestions we also had scouts in Scotland to see Celtic’s Nicolas Kuhn.
Newcastle may have to contend with interest from two other Premier League clubs in the player, but much like PSV’s Johan Bakayoko, a continental winger with the numbers of Paixão could be a fantastic bit of business for the right price.
Who is Igor Paixão?
Igor Paixão, the Brazilian forward, has over 20 goal contributions in all competitions this season, most recently against AC Milan in the Champions League playoffs.
At only 24-years-old, his dismantling of Kyle Walker on Wednesday night also brought a lot of attention to him from across the continent.
Much like his former Feyenoord teammate Yankuba Minteh, he boasts a lot of pace and dribbling capabilities: something which definitely wouldn’t go amiss on Newcastle’s right flank in particular.
Who’s interested?
According to The Sun, Newcastle are reportedly interested in a summer move for Paixão to bring him from De Kuip to St James’ Park.
However, Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth are both said to be interested in the Brazilian. It’s believed all three clubs had scouts in attendance in their midweek win over Milan in the UEFA Champions League, with Paixão thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
Rosser adds that the Rotterdam club value Paixão at approximately £25m, having only signed him from Brazilian side Coritiba back in 2022.
How does he help Newcastle?
Over the past two months, Newcastle fans have been getting cautiously hopeful of securing European football for next season – which will obviously drastically increase the game time for the squad.
Paixão, if he wasn’t already penned as a potential starter for Eddie Howe’s side, could be a perfect rotation option with the in-form Jacob Murphy to contend with, as the Brazilian is capable of playing down both flanks.
Coming from outside of the Premier League and other ‘top five Leagues’ will be a very welcome sight for the Newcastle hierarchy: without a ‘Premier League tax’ levied on him, Paixão could be a fantastic budget option whilst Newcastle still contend with PSR limits.
And for the more optimistic fan, Newcastle’s relationship with Feyenoord owing from the Minteh loan could propel them above Spurs and Bournemouth in any potential negotiations between the clubs
