Newcastle player ratings from HISTORIC 2-1 win over Liverpool – 15 heroes at Wembley

A day we’ll never forget and an absolutely sensational performance full of guts, drive and determination as Newcastle United beat Liverpool 2-1 to end our 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak grabbed the goals, but it was a dominant display against the Premier League leaders featuring 15 heroes in black and white.

Here’s our player ratings and comments on everyone who took part in a history-making 90 minutes at Wembley:

Nick Pope (10) – Unbelievable reflex save from Jones and was a commanding presence all game. Also quick off his line, which cut out the odd ball in behind.

Kieran Trippier (10) – Leadership and experience on full display. His first 20 minutes was huge in settling us down and making Diaz realise he was in for a tough afternoon. Beautiful assist for the opener and some classy headers back to Pope to calm down potentially dangerous Liverpool attacks.

Fabian Schar (10) – Defensively his best defensive performance for a long time. Back to the Schar of old. His passing was also far better; a few cutting passes to get the ball wide and nothing silly to gift the ball back in bad areas. Won one HUGE header in the final moments to stop Van Dijk flicking on what could’ve been one final chance for Liverpool.

Dan Burn (10) – What a colossal performance to cap off a dream week for Big Dan Burn, who scored the all important opener with an incredible header. Won everything in the air and is forever immortalised as a Geordie hero.

Tino Livramento (10) – Kept Salah anonymous all game and offered some great lung busting runs going forward; one of which help create Isak’s goal. Top class performance at both ends.

Bruno Guimaraes (10) – In the history books as the first captain to lift a trophy in 56 years for the club. Forever etched in folklore. Top performance on the pitch too (aside from ill advised pirouette which led to the goal!). Ran rings around Mac Allister and pulled the strings all afternoon.

Sandro Tonali (10) – What an engine he has on him. His recovery runs were a real highlight and nullified and possible counter attack. Has mastered the art of applying pressure without giving away needless fouls. Composed and slick on the ball, relentless off it.

Joelinton (10) – An absolute monster. Gave every last ounce of energy and was arguably the best player on the pitch. Gave the Liverpool midfield nightmares and bullied their right side. Set the tone, spurred on the crowd and showed a great touch in tight situations to bring down the ball and keep it.

Jacob Murphy (10) – Can count on one hand the amount of headers I’ve seen him win in his Newcastle career but none more important than the assist which led to the winner. Ran himself into the ground, set up the second and went close with another low shot late on.

Harvey Barnes (10) – Was a threat all game and justified his selection. Cut in and drove with the ball, also creating space for passes into Tino after decoy runs inside. Arguably his most effective game since returning from injury

Alexander Isak (10) – Was barely sighted but scored what turned out to be the winner. Responsible for scoring the deciding goal which ended our drought solidifies him as a hero at this club. Ran until his legs gave up and gave Van Dijk nightmares in the end after a quiet first half.

Callum Wilson (10) – Battled in the corner to look after the ball late on.

Joe Willock (10) – Came on down the left for Barnes. Some nice link up play.

Emil Krafth (10) – Replaced Murphy in the 90th minute to help us see the game out.

Eddie Howe (10) – Set the perfect tone in the build up to today’s games, learned from mistakes made two years ago, got his team selection bang on and delivered a tactical masterclass against Arne Slot’s soon-to-be champions. Sir Eddie, what a manager!
