It looks like Newcastle United are now stepping up their efforts to sign James Trafford.
According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle are now in talks with Burnley over a deal to bring the goalkeeper to St James’ Park this summer.
They report that the newly-promoted Clarets are looking for a fee in the region of £30m, although Newcastle are keen to negotiate.
Trafford is thought to be Eddie Howe’s No 1 goalkeeper target this summer, with Sky Sports revealing that the Toon boss hopes to have the 22-year-old battling Nick Pope for a starting spot next season.
Newcastle launched a £16m bid for the England talent last summer, but saw Burnley stand firm and keep him at Turf Moor ahead of their promotion push.
A full season later, Trafford broke records for clean sheets, keeping 29 over the 2024/25 season to send them back to the Premier League under former Toon midfielder Scott Parker.
Over one period, the Burnley stopper went 910 minutes without conceding a single goal in the Championship, keeping 10 clean sheets in a row.
Time will tell if it’s second time lucky for Newcastle, who are back in talks over a deal, but this would be a smart move, the signing of another exciting England international and the addition of a ball-playing goalkeeper to help us play out from the back.
