Newcastle explore shock moves for Yoane Wissa and Aston Villa star – Report

After two years without a major first team signing and a tough June full of early setbacks, Newcastle’s transfer business is finally ramping up.

Anthony Elanga is due on Tyneside for a medical any minute now after a £55m package was agreed with Nottingham Forest, but more signings are needed as we also look to sign a goalkeeper, centre-back and striker.

In the last few moments, a new name has emerged in one of those positions, with Craig Hope issuing a Tuesday afternoon update in his latest piece for The Mail.

He reveals that two new names who’ve been explored in our striker search include Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

It’s believed both forwards have been discussed over the past two weeks as we look to replace Callum Wilson after missing out on Joao Pedro to Chelsea.

The problem? Neither would be cheap and they are 28 (Wissa) and 29 (Watkins). That is several years younger than 33-year-old Wilson, but would we pay the required fee given their age and would they arrive to compete with Isak?

The lure of Champions League football and Eddie Howe could be a factor, along with the number of competitions we’ll be competing in next season, but Hope things Wissa is the more likely of the two.

He ‘has admirers’ at Newcastle and is one to ‘keep a close eye on’, with the club valuing his ability to also play in wide areas; which he often did at Brentford prior to Ivan Toney’s exit.

Wissa bagged an outstanding 19 goals last season, following on from his 12 goal return over the 2023/24 campaign.

Hope also reports that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on the list of options being considered, but insists there has NOT been any talks over a move for the former Everton striker, who is currently a free agent.
