Newcastle bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to Brighton and build on our midweek win over Benfica on Saturday, seeing off Fulham thanks to a last gap goal from Bruno Guimaraes.
It was a vital win for Eddie Howe and a weekend where many of our European rivals won, with Spurs seeing off Everton 3-0, Man Utd putting four past Brighton, Bournemouth winning again and Aston Villa producing a surprise home victory over Man City.
Alan Shearer has looked back at a busy weekend of Premier League action and released his Team of the Week, selection two Newcastle United star in Malick Thiaw and Bruno Guimaraes.
Thiaw was imperious against Fulham, showing his quality in possession, reading the play well and coming on strong late in the day with some vital turnovers to get us back on the attack, with Sharer hailing his ‘assured’ start to life on Tyneside.
As for Bruno, Shearer thought the Brazilian ‘led by example’ and delivered another strong display, with that now his sixth goal involvement in 12 appearances in all competitions.
Shearer on Thiaw – “Continued his assured start since joining Newcastle in the summer. Looked really composed on the ball and gave very little away in defence.”
Shearer on Bruno – “Led by example once again, with another strong performance in midfield. Just when his team really needed it, he reacted fastest to pounce on the loose ball and score the winner against Fulham.”
Our former No.9 also selected Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka in his TOTW after Sunderland’s big win at Chelsea, along with two from Spurs, two Villains, Man Utd’s Bryan Mbeumo and a trio from Brentford, Bournemouth and Burnley:
