Despite a certain Crystal Palace defender dominating the transfer headlines over the final months of the summer window, recent reports suggest we’ll prioritise the signing of a new right-winger in January.
However, the latest ‘exclusive’ to emerge over the last 24 hours links us to a centre-back from Spain, adding a new name to the list of potential options under consideration on Tyneside.
Here’s the latest addition to the rumour mill as we edge closer to a potentially crucial January window for the club…
Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of signing Barcelona’s Eric Garcia during the January transfer window, according to FootballTransfers.
The La Liga club is reportedly open to selling the Spanish international for a reduced fee of €25million. It is a modest sum that may well bring the Toon to the table as we push for value-for-money deals.
However, it’s thought we’d face competition from Chelsea should we pursue the versatile defender, with Blues boss Enzo Maresca also in the market for a centre-back.
The 23-year-old can also operate as a holding midfielder and played 35 times for Man City before departing in 2021 after failing to agree a new deal at the Etihad.
Garcia, who spent last season on loan at Girona, has struggled to secure a regular starting spot under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.
The club faces pressure to offload players in January, partly to resolve registration issues with Dani Olmo, whose eligibility expires on December 31 unless additional funds are made available.
While Newcastle are still navigating profit and sustainability rules (PSR) restrictions and our primary focus remains on securing a right-winger, we’ll still be in the market for a central defender after trying and failing to land Marc Guehi over the summer.
Sven Botman is almost back and Jamaal Lascelles will also return from a long-term injury in the coming months. Still, it’s believed Garcia has emerged as a potential replacement for Lascelles and is among the names on Newcastle’s shortlist.
There may be some credence to this, given Guehi is expected to evaluate his options next summer in favour of departing Crystal Palace over the summer.
