Earlier this week, we released an NUFC Blog exclusive on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Barnsley talent Josh Kenchington.
We revealed that Newcastle had won the race to sign the 14-year-old defender, beating a number of ‘big six’ rivals to the England Under-15 international who was named Barnsley’s Academy player of the year for 2024/25.
Today, new details have emerged on our move for the young centre-back, with Sky Sports’ Keith Downie revealing the financial package in place to land the Yorkshireman.
Downie reports that Newcastle have struck a deal worth £350,000 plus ‘significant bonuses’ for Kenchington, with the club upping their offer after an opening bid worth £275,000 was turned down.
He also reveals that Newcastle beat Man Utd, Spurs and Brighton to his signature, highlighting how the ever-improving appeal of our Academy after consistent investment and care over the past four years.
The youngster has ben compared to John Stones for his stature, quality on the ball and rise through the ranks at Barnsley, which is where Stones started his career before spells at Everton and Man City.
Kenchington is two-footed, stands over six foot tall and has already played at Under-18 level, with his move to Tyneside set to officially go through once he receives Premier League clearance.
As Downie reports, the centre-back will attend school in the North East while training at the Academy.
