Cillian Murphy is back in the world of Peaky Blinders with a new look at the upcoming movie Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. The new image of Murphy’s Tommy Shelby has him returning to Birmingham, dirty and bloody, leaving audiences to wonder what brought him here. The original series chronicled the history of Shelby’s gang in the early 20th century, with The Immortal Man unfolding in 1940 at the start of World War II.

The sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders debuted in 2022, with fans of the series noticing the significance of this image of Tommy on a horse, given that when last we saw him in the series finale, he was leaving town on a horse. Murphy reflected on returning to the role that helped cement him as a fan-favorite actor, expressing:
“I loved that beautiful ambiguity of him riding off on the horse, and he’s gone, and we don’t know where he’s gone to, but he’s back in the Gypsy world … Now here he is existing in whatever way that he can against the backdrop of World War II. That’s very elegant bookmarking of a story.”
Murphy was far from being an unknown when he joined Peaky Blinders, but he’s since starred in a number of high-profile movies, including winning an Academy Award for his performance in Oppenheimer.
Bookending ‘Peaky Blinders’
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is set to hit theaters and Netflix in March 2026, marking four years since audiences last saw Tommy. Rather than this movie being the chance to reignite Tommy’s narrative, series creator Steven Knight shared how he hopes this movie serves as the conclusion to a decade-long narrative:
“I hope it feels like the end of a novel … It’s the last few chapters of a long novel, where you get to round it off. And prepare people for what comes next.”
Joining Murphy in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man are Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Jay Lycurgo, and Barry Keoghan. The movie is officially described:
Birmingham, 1940. Amidst the chaos of WWII, Tommy Shelby is driven back from a self-imposed exile to face his most destructive reckoning yet. With the future of the family and the country at stake, Tommy must face his own demons, and choose whether to confront his legacy, or burn it to the ground.
Even though this movie will be the ending for Tommy Shelby, The Immortal Man won’t bring this world to a complete conclusion. A sequel series is already confirmed, which is set to jump forward to 1953 and will explore the aftermath of World War II on Birmingham as the Shelby family aims to retain their foothold on the city.
