Stephen Amell is best known for playing Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, in Arrow, the DC superhero show that launched the Arrowverse on The CW. At its peak, the Arrowverse included shows like The Flash, Superman & Lois, and more, so DC fans have a lot to thank him for.
Since then, Amell has starred in the professional wrestling drama Heels and the Suits spinoff Suits LA, both of which were canceled before their time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s now landed his next big project: he’ll play the lead role in Baywatch, an upcoming reboot of the lifeguard drama that became the most popular show in the world during its original, 11-season run, from 1989 to 2000.
“From the first conversation, Stephen Amell brought exactly what this new chapter of Baywatch demands: heart, intensity, and that undeniable hero energy,” said executive producer and showrunner Matt Nix in a statement. “He’s the kind of lead who can sprint into danger, carry the emotional weight, and still make it feel fun. We’re so excited to get started.”
Stephen Amell Will Run Through Ocean Spray Wearing Red Swim Trunks in ‘Baywatch’ Reboot
The original Baywatch was known for its soapy dramas about lifeguards and for slow-motion shots of people in bathing suits running through the surf. It helped launch the careers of actors like Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Jason Momoa, and David Hasselhoff, who played head lifeguard Mitch Buchannon. As it happens, the 44-year-old Amell will be playing Mitch’s son, Hobie Buchannon. Hobie was played by Brandon Call in the first season of the original Baywatch and by Jeremy Jackson after that. Now he’s fully grown up and following in his father’s footsteps, as so often happens in these sorts of lifeguarding dynasties.
Paramount made a Baywatch feature film starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in 2017, but it’s been decades since the franchise has had a TV show. Veteran director McG will direct the pilot episode of this new Baywaych series. McG has experience rebooting old TV shows; he directed the 2000 movie reboot of Charlie’s Angels starring Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz, as well as its 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Funnily enough, that franchise is also getting a reboot. In any case, he could be a good fit for Baywatch.

One of the stars of the hit Netflix crime series wants to join the world of superheroes.
Fox is expected to start shooting Baywatch sometime this spring. We don’t know who else will appear in the show nor do we have an exact release date, but the goal is to air the series as part of the 2026-2027 TV season.
