Netflix’s New Harlan Coben Thriller Proves to Be a Must-Binge

Netflix’s New Harlan Coben Thriller Proves to Be a Must-Binge

How far into the tangled web of dark secrets would you go to find your missing daughter? That is the intriguingly pulpy question posed by the latest Netflix series, which sees the streamer adapt another story from renowned mystery thriller writer Harlan Coben. And, based on the first reactions, the latest foray into the twisted mind of Coben promises to be another binge-worthy must-see series.

Adapted from the novel by Harlan Coben, Run Away stars James Nesbitt, Ruth Jones, Minnie Driver, and Alfred Enoch, and follows a father who, while searching for his runaway daughter, finds himself at the center of a murder case. And no doubt you’re already gripped. All eight episodes of the series are now streaming on Netflix, with critics largely heaping praise on this latest Harlan Coben offering from Netflix.

Run Away now stands at a promising 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety saying, “Full of shocking twists and turns and gruesome violence, which are par for the course with all of Coben’s works, the show is an entertaining maze from its opening scene until the close.” Ready Steady Cut, meanwhile, rated Run Away a near-perfect 4/5 and teases all manner of mystery, concluding, “Expect a lot of climactic cliffhanger montages that continuously upend everything you thought you knew about… well, everything.”

“If You’ve Enjoyed Previous Harlan Coben Adaptations, You Should Love This One”

While there have been some criticisms, with RogertEbert.com chastising “nonsensical plot twists that only the most hardcore Harlanheads will be able to run with it,” there is plenty of positivity. Another 4/5 comes courtesy of Heaven of Horror who call Run Away “among the very best of the adaptations. If you’ve enjoyed previous Harlan Coben adaptations, you should love this one,” with London Evening Standard saying (alongside another 4/5 rating), “The fact that Run Away works is because the plot moves too quickly for viewers to digest the gaping plot holes on show. Nevertheless, it’s worth picking your way around them.”

Even those who found the holes too gaping to look past still enjoyed the ride, with Collider concluding, “It’s kind of bonkers and likely to engage viewers, but one can’t help but be left wanting a little more.” Ultimately, it sounds like Run Away might just be the perfect mystery thriller binge as you come to terms with the fact it’s somehow now 2026. You can check out the official synopsis for Run Away below…

“A desperate father searching for his runaway daughter gets caught up in a murder case — and stumbles upon secrets which could destroy his family for good.”

Netflix continues to find success playing the Harlan Coben crime thriller game (with Prime Video now joining in too). Following the likes of Safe, Fool Me Once, Missing You, and more, Netflix will next adapt Coben’s mystery thriller novel, I Will Find You, starring Avatar’s Sam Worthington as “a father serving a life sentence for the murder of his young son Matthew — a crime that he didn’t commit, but a tragedy that he has spent years punishing himself for every day.” I Will Find You is now in production and is expected to be released later this year.
