The director behind one of Netflix’s most exciting action movies has teased his epic plans for the future of the franchise. While a sequel has not yet been officially confirmed by the streamer, filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has revealed what he hopes to achieve with The Shadow Strays. And reading what he has in mind is pure action thriller poetry.
Taking to X/Twitter, Tjahjanto, who is currently hard at work bringing one of Jason Statham’s best action thriller franchises back in The Beekeeper 2, revealed what he has planned for The Shadow Strays. And it includes both a sequel and a prequel spin-off…
“There are two branches of Shadows film that I’m hoping I get to make .
One is the Nomi/13 saga
And another is a separate tale of the character Volver which was seen briefly in The Shadow Strays.
Hoping to make these within the next 2 years.”
Written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto, The Shadow Strays landed on Netflix in October last year and is led by Aurora Ribero as the assassin known as 13, a 17-year-old trained killer. This is far from the first time that Tjahjanto has declared his eagerness to make a sequel, with the director still determined to continue 13’s story in a follow-up, while launching what would presumably be a prequel centered on another Shadow, Volver, played in the first outing by Eva Celia.
While further details remain in the mind of Tjahjanto for now, here’s hoping that Netflix does the right thing and allows him to craft what could quite easily become one of the greatest and most epic action thriller sagas of all time.
Timo Tjahjanto Has a Lot to Live Up to With ‘The Shadow Strays 2’
The Shadow Strays was met with rave reviews upon release and now boasts a score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reactions heaped praise on the action outing, with one critic concluding that, “In terms of action movies, The Shadow Strays has it all,” while another adds, “For action cinephiles, it really doesn’t get better than a film like this.” You can check out the official synopsis for The Shadow Strays below…
“After nearly botching a mission, Codename 13, a prodigal assassin found herself suspended from further duties. The killer teen meets Monji, a young boy who lost his mother to a crime syndicate. When Monji disappeared, 13 turned on setting a path of destruction to find her only friend… even at the cost of defying her mentor and the organization she belongs to; The Shadows.”
While Tjahjanto clearly has a lot to live up to should he be given the chance to helm The Shadow Strays 2 and his planned spin-off, the filmmaker has made the wise decision to turn to the classics for inspiration. “Almost finished with a story outline for 13 / Nomi’s next saga. Taking alot of inspiration from The Godfather 2,” the director said of the sequel previously.
Timo Tjahjanto has now broken into Hollywood, recently directing the action sequel Nobody 2. The filmmaker will next join forces with one of the most iconic action stars, Jason Statham, for The Beekeeper 2, which is expected to create a buzz in theaters in 2026, courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios.
