Heartstopper graphic novel author Alice Oseman has teased when viewers can expect the Netflix show’s finale movie — and though it won’t be for a while, there’s a good reason why.
Heartstopper season 3 ended on an overwhelmingly positive note, as Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) took their physical relationship to the next level. It’s a particularly loving moment between the two teenagers, who overcame a lot to be comfortable enough with themselves and with each other to embrace such a meaningful step.
Though the equivalent narrative scene in the Heartstopper graphic novels feels slightly different, as Nick’s worries about university influence their actions more, show creator Oseman has revealed that the Netflix adaptation’s last outing, titled Heartstopper Forever, will not be released before the print publication of the final book.
“It was so important to me that the book comes out first, so people can experience the end of the story in the book,” Oseman responded to a question submitted by Deadline during a Q&A at this year’s London Book Fair. “The series was the adaptation, not the other way around,” she continued.
Heartstopper was originally self-published as a webcomic in 2016 before Hachette’s Children’s Group picked up the series for printing in 2018. The final Heartstopper novel will be the sixth volume overall and is slated for paperback release in the United States on July 7, 2026. It is available for pre-order now.
Though Oseman’s update means there are at least a couple of months left to wait for Netflix Heartstopper fans, it has already been confirmed that Charlie and Nick’s final on-screen chapter will premiere this year. During the same Q&A panel, Oseman said that the movie was “literally days away from being finished.” Production wrapped in July 2025.
Providing a bit more detail, Oseman, who is also Heartstopper Forever‘s scriptwriter, said, “We are doing the final little bits of VFX and animation, and hopefully, by the end of next week, it is going to be sent to be dubbed in various languages and quality-checked by Netflix, but my work on it will be done.”
Still Alice and Colette director Wash Westmoreland leads Heartstopper Forever, with both Locke and Connor reprising their roles. The rest of the cast has yet to be confirmed by Netflix and Oseman, though the streamer has said that “Nick, Charlie, and their pals” will return.
Though plot details are being kept under wraps, Netflix has released an official synopsis for the movie:
“The film will wrap up Nick and Charlie’s journey. After Season 3, the couple is inseparable. But, with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, Nick and Charlie’s friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on.”
Previously, Oseman told Netflix’s Tudum that the movie will be “an exploration of time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, endings and beginnings, and the core element of Heartstopper: the ordinary magic of our everyday lives.” For comparison, Heartstopper Volume 6’s synopsis is as follows:
“Nick and Charlie have faced so much together, but with Nick leaving for school and Charlie aiming to become head boy, the two are forced to confront the future in this charming conclusion to the beloved series. Everyone in school knows Nick and Charlie. Everyone knows they’re going to be together forever. But Charlie’s busy with his bid to become head boy. And while Nick is preparing to leave for college, he’s starting to wonder who he’ll be… without Charlie.”
For anyone unable to wait for more of Nick and Charlie’s final romantic adventure, Oseman continues to upload Heartstopper Volume 6 pages to Webtoon and Tumblr.
Heartstopper Forever will premiere on Netflix in 2026.
