Netflix’s Big-Budget Action Fantasy Adaptation ‘Agent from Above’ Coming in 2026

Netflix’s Big-Budget Action Fantasy Adaptation ‘Agent from Above’ Coming in 2026

One of the most ambitious action fantasy projects ever undertaken by Netflixx has finally been given a promising release update seven years after it was first announced. The streamer is, of course, no stranger to fantasy fare, with the likes of The Witcher, Shadow & Bone, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and more proving to be huge hits for the platform. But they will likely pale in comparison to what Netflix has planned for this particular adaptation.

Following years of stalling and jumping over all manner of production hurdles, Agent from Above is finally set to hit Netflix in 2026, with the streamer confirming that the large-scale action-fantasy series, which is based on the first book of the popular novel series “The Oracle Comes” by Taiwanese author Teensy, will finally be unleashed.

After starting production in 2019 and being given a failed release date of 2023 (the series was reportedly held back due to major VFX work), Agent from Above is inspired by Taoist mythology, with the series following a spirit medium (Kai Ko) who must resolve supernatural disturbances to restore balance between the human and demon realms. Agent from Above will now land on Netflix in Q2 2026 (April, June time), and you can check out the synopsis, which promises to combine supernatural folklore with urban fantasy, below…

Bound by a deity’s pact, Han Chieh fights demons on Earth. When he uncovers an old enemy’s plan for a second invasion, he must fight to save humanity.

Netflix Hails ‘Agent From Above’ as “A Visual Tour de Force That Delivers Spectacular World-Building”

Still from Agent from Above. Netflix

Directed by Kuan Wei-chieh and Lai Chun-yu, with Melvin Ang and Rita Chuang serving as executive producers, Agent from Above boasts a who’s who of talent hailing from Taiwan, including Kai Ko (You Are the Apple of My Eye, Kung Fu), Wang Po-chieh (Life of Pi, The Embers), Buffy Chen (The Silent Forest), Johnny Yang (Warrior, The Rip), and Hsueh Shih-ling (Taiwan Crime Stories).

Netflix promises that Agent from Above will be worth the wait for action fantasy fans, declaring it “a visual tour de force that delivers spectacular world-building and artistry, setting a new benchmark that stands shoulder to shoulder with high-end fantasy productions globally.” Agent from Above is just one part of Netflix’s 2026 Chinese-language story slate, with Maya Huang, Head of Chinese Language Content at Netflix, excited to take “creative risks” with future projects.

“Chinese-language storytelling is singular in its vibrancy, emotional depth, and willingness to explore complex, darker human truths. We’re especially excited by stories that take creative risks and immerse audiences in extraordinary worlds and experiences. Our goal is to uplift local storytelling while partnering with Taiwan’s creative community to expand access to support, training and resources.”

The hugely ambitious action fantasy series has come undone over the past near-decade for various reasons, including the global COVID-19 lockdowns, an ever-growing budget that has made it one of the most expensive shows ever made in Taiwan, a daunting amount of visual effects work needed to bring the series to life, and lead actor Kai Ko suffering a serious injury following a stunt gone wrong. Finally, with everything wrapped up and Kai Ko having recovered, Agent from Above is all set to make its streaming debut, at last.
