Unfamiliar is a brand-new Netflix show that’s already climbing the charts. It’s about a pair of ex-spies named Meret (Susanne Wolff) and Simon (Felix Kramer). Together, they run a safe house in Berlin. When an old threat emerges, they find themselves fending off attacks from assassins, ex-lovers, Russian agents, and more, all while trying to keep their marriage together. And all the trouble starts on their daughter’s (Maja Bons) 16th birthday, so they have no end of problems to deal with.
The first season of Unfamiliar, which dropped in its entirety on February 5, consists of six episodes, each of which is around 50 minutes apiece. All told, the first season runs for five hours and 12 minutes. That’s a long time to sit down, but this show can easily be binged in a weekend.

Unfamiliar is currently the seventh most-watched show on Netflix in the United States, just a day after dropping, landing ahead of other recent releases like the comedy Free Bert and the stand-up special Mike Epps: Delusional. That said, it’s well behind the hottest new release of the week: the fourth season of The Lincoln Lawyer, which is currently in the second-place spot. The only thing placing higher at the moment is the behemoth that is Bridgerton.
Still, that’s a very strong placement for a brand-new series. Unfamiliar has yet to break into the global top 10 chart for the most-watched Netflix shows, but it may well appear there over the weekend as more people find it. And it is trending in several countries, including Bulgaria, Denmark, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, and Vietnam.
As a German-language series, Unfamiliar has some international appeal. Netflix has brought us several excellent German-language series over the years, including Barbarians, The Empress, and the sci-fi show Dark, which remains one of the best Lost replacements ever made. Likewise, Netflix has seen a lot of success with spy shows like The Night Agent, The Recruit, and Treason. Unfamiliar fits right in with that group.
At present, there’s no word on whether Unfamiliar will get a second season. However, the first ends with plenty left unresolved, so it feels like there’s more story to come. Considering how successful this first season has already been, it seems likely that we’ll get to see it sooner or later.
