The first-ever champion of America’s Next Top Model, Adrianne Curry, has taken a swing at a new Netflix docuseries investigating the reality show’s legacy. Originating on UPN in 2003, where it aired for six seasons before the network and The WB merged to create The CW three years later, ANTM was eventually axed in 2015. VH1’s revival quickly emerged in 2016, lasting for just two years.
Premiering on Monday, February 16, three-parter Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model is set to unpack the multitudinous controversies that went on behind the scenes, but Curry believes that applying modern standards to this hitherto institution is a silly endeavor. Addressing the project via her personal social media profile this week, the 43-year-old wrote: “I think people psychoanalyzing it over 20 years later with a woke lens is absurd,” while also revealing that she refused to participate in the documentary alongside creator and presenter Tyra Banks.
“I don’t trust people to not manipulate things I say for TV, so I decline everything. Also, the public is cult-like and cruel, so the last thing I want is a bunch of eyeballs on me. I hope the other girls do not have their words twisted in their Netflix show. I have [zero] trust in any producers, no desire to be really public in this day and age … and am hard retired from Hollywood.”
In the Reality Check trailer, Banks is seen conceding: “I knew I went too far… it was very intense, but you guys were demanding it.” Creative director Jay Manuel goes on to add: “I realized Tyra would do anything for the success of her show.” Across its existence, ANTM endured allegations of fat-shaming amongst other things.

Following her life-changing victory on ANTM — beating fellow contestants Shannon Stewart and Elyse Sewell in the final — Curry was signed to Wilhelmina Models of New York City, where she picked up work for significant clients such as Life & Style, Us Weekly, Star, OK!, Stuff, People, Maxim, Von Dutch, Macy’s, Famous Stars and Straps, Lucky, and Ed Hardy. In 2006 and 2008, she appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine.
All the while, the reality star kept her toes in the television world, hosting The Surreal Life for three years; playing Danushka in an episode of real estate sitcom Hot Properties, and gaining notable spots on My Fair Brady, Celebrity Paranormal Project, Celebrity Family Feud, World’s Dumbest, and The Tester.
However, in 2023, Curry was burned on social media after publicly implying that The Last of Us cast member Melanie Lynskey did not display the correct kind of body to portray revolutionary leader Kathleen Coghlan. In a since-deleted tweet, she claimed that such a villain should be muscular, causing Lynskey to respond directly: “[The character is] supposed to be smart, ma’am. I don’t need to be muscly. That’s what henchmen are for.”
