Netflix Reveals Fate of New Video Game Action Series Just One Day After Season 1 Premiere

Netflix Reveals Fate of New Video Game Action Series Just One Day After Season 1 Premiere

The survival of a Netflix series can be decided immediately after a new season debuts, or after months of worry from fans. Less than a month after its 2021 premiere, Netflix canceled Cowboy Bebop, showing the swiftness with which the streamer is ready to determine a production’s future (or lack thereof). On the other hand, the streaming platform has shown confidence in its animated projects, which have grown in number over the past few years. One of their latest projects, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, for example, had already secured a second season, only a day after it premiered on the service. It’s an impressive show of faith in the adaptation of the video game franchise.

What is interesting about this renewal is how quiet Netflix was about the affair, releasing the Season 2 promotional image for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch via a press publicity e-mail. Variety reported on the renewal of the series, and the outlet would point out that the series had received a two-season order as far back as 2020, which makes this announcement slightly less surprising and explains why the company was so quick to announce it shortly after the premiere. Knowing a second season is already on the way will hopefully increase viewership of the newly released first season, which consists of eight episodes.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is based on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, a stealth video game franchise that has released 7 games to date. The last game in the series to date was Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which came out in 2013. While it’s been quite some time since another Splinter Cell video game came out, the Netflix animated series has helped keep the IP relevant, especially since there aren’t any public plans to continue making Splinter Cell games. Interestingly, rather than being a reboot or reimagining, Deathwatch plays out more like a supplemental viewing for the world of the games, telling a new story while building on the established relationships among characters from the games.

‘Splinter Cell: Deathwatch’ Season 2 Could Help Revitalize the Franchise

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch features a talented cast, with Liev Schreiber voicing Sam Fisher, replacing Michael Ironside and Eric Johnson, who previously voiced the character in the video game series. Along with Kirby Howell-Baptiste as the secondary protagonist, Zinnia McKenna, Deathwatch also features the voice talents of Janet Varney, Helen Hong, Kari Wahlgren, Joel Oulette, Aleks Le, Kiff VandenHeuvel, Bella Dayne, and Navid Negahban. The logline for the series reads as follows:

“Legendary agent Sam Fisher is drawn back into the field when a wounded young operative seeks out his help.”

The animated series was created and developed by Derek Kolstad, a screenwriter best known for his work on the first three John Wick films starring Keanu Reeves, as well as the Nobody movies starring Bob Odenkirk. With seven video games, several novels, and now two seasons of television, the Splinter Cell franchise is as alive as ever. Hopefully, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch finds popularity on streaming and incentivizes Ubisoft to revitalize the video game franchise, whether that be the long-rumored remake of the first game or a new entry in the series on next-generation video game consoles.
