MobLand stars Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren have once again joined forces in the streaming world, this time in an upcoming Netflix mystery comedy titled The Thursday Murder Club. Heading to the streamer on Aug. 28, the new film hails from veteran filmmaker Chris Columbus (Home Alone) and follows four retirees that solve cold case murders for fun. The Thursday Murder Club is based on the 2020 novel of the same name by author and television presenter Richard Osman.
On Thursday, Netflix released the first official teaser for The Thursday Murder Club, after revealing the release date and several first-look images earlier this year. Alongside Brosnan and Mirren, the film also stars Academy Award-winner Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie. All four of those names form part of the titular cold case-solving group, which comes across a real murder case that gets them embroiled in a thrilling “whodunit” mystery. Fortunately, the teaser does not give any spoilers away, but teases an exciting mystery thriller that gives off major Only Murders in the Building vibes. You can check out the teaser trailer below.

We know what we’ll be bingeing this weekend.
Per Netflix’s official logline, The Thursday Murder Club is about “a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves caught in a real case.” However, those “friends” are more than they appear on the surface. Mirren plays the ex-spy Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan is the ex–union activist Ron, Kingsley portrays an ex-psychiatrist named Ibrahim, and Celia Imrie rounds out the group as ex-nurse Joyce. Columbus, who directed the film based on a screenplay by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, praised the film’s cast, which he says is the “finest” he has worked with since his Harry Potter days.
“This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since Potter. They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”
‘The Thursday Murder Club’ Creator Reveals Inspiration for Mystery Novel
The Thursday Murder Club author Richard Osman revealed to Netflix that seeing retirees share their unique wisdom and knowledge inspired him to write a story that followed “underestimated people” who have incredible skills. With a star-studded cast spearheaded by Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, both of whom still form part of major film and TV franchises, the Netflix adaptation is living proof of the narrative’s concept. Osman:
“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom. You think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’ The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve [a crime] is exactly where The Thursday Murder Club comes from. Take these people who are underestimated but who have these incredible skills, put them together, and they can achieve anything.”
It’s unclear if Netflix is planing a franchise, but Osman has already published three different sequels: The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed, and The Last Devil to Die, while a fourth installment, titled The Impossible Fortune, is headed to book stores later this year.
