In the most recent instance of Netflix canceling a series after only a single season, the latest casualty is Olympo, the Spanish-language sports drama. There’s no official reason announced for why the series has come to an end, with the narrative’s relatively grounded premise likely meaning that production costs weren’t a factor in the decision. Like many all-new YA titles, when Olympo debuted, it went into the Top 10 charts in a number of territories, though never quite became a phenomenon. With aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes calculating only 43% positive reviews among critics and 75% positive reviews from audiences, it’s possible the middling reception to the show’s quality was a factor.
TVLine confirmed news of the series’ cancellation. Netflix officially described Olympo:
The country’s best athletes train at the Pirineos High Performance Center, such as Amaia (Clara Galle), the captain of the national synchronized swimming team who demands only the best from herself and does not allow any mistakes. But when her teammate and best friend Núria (María Romanillos) outstrips her for the first time, Amaia realizes that some athletes are inexplicably improving their performance… After years of pushing their bodies to the limit and sacrificing their lives for the sport, they face a dilemma: how far are they willing to go?
The series also starred Nira Osahia, Agustín Della Corte, Nuno Gallego, Andy Duato, Najwa Khliwa, Juan Perales, Martí Cordero, Jesús Rubio, and Melina Matthews.
Netflix’s 2025 Casualties
Olympo is far from the only streaming series that came and went in 2025, with Netflix alone bringing many series to an end. This year saw the debut of shows like Territory, The Residence, Pulse, The Waterfront, and Too Much, with 2025 also serving as the final year we’d get new episodes of these titles. More surprisingly, this year saw both The Recruit and FUBAR come to an end after only two seasons, with these cancellations being more unexpected, based on the popularity of the titles and the talent attached.
One of the most talked-about cancellations is that of Boots, which was canceled only two months after it hit Netflix. While a series like Olympo featured an ensemble of characters and included queer storylines, Boots specifically focused on the real-life experiences of Greg Cope White being a gay man in the military. The cancellation of the series was a blow to representation, made all the more shocking due to the critical acclaim the program earned.
What might be the biggest ending in Netflix’s history comes this year, as Stranger Things will make its bow on December 31, though rather than a cancellation, creators Matt and Ross Duffer got to end the series on their own terms.
