Netflixhas continued its run of series cancellations with the announcement that military coming-of-age dramedy Bootswill not be returning after its highly praised, if publicly controversial, first season. The show debuted back in October, but it looks like it will be added to the one-and-done roster of Netflix shows that have not been renewed for a second run.
Inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, Boots centered on Cameron (Miles Heizer) and his best friend Ray (Liam Oh) as they enlist in the Marines for different reasons—Cameron to escape home and find direction while closeted, Ray to live up to his father’s legacy. The ensemble included Vera Farmiga, Max Parker, Kieron Moore and Ana Ayora. The official logline of the series reads:
“After impulsively joining the U.S. Marine Corps, a bullied teen finds new purpose — and unexpected brotherhood — with his motley team of fellow recruits.”
While the show did not remain a chart-topper for long, it did build momentum on its release thanks to both a strong set of reviews and some controversial opinions aimed towards it from real military personnel, who called out the show’s accuracy. Boots had almost 10 million views in its second week on the platform, a rise from the 5 million during its debut week. Critics and audiences both scored it 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, with some high praise being given to the performances of the lead cast.
The show was slammed as “woke garbage” by Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson, who openly criticized Netflix’s “ideological agenda.” If anything, this probably just led even more people to discover the series at the time, boosting its viewership a little more.
Fans of the show have been left devastated by the news and did not take long to make their feelings about the latest Netflix cancellation known. “That is so frustrating. It was a popular show, and it wasn’t expensive,” said one, while another added, “There was nothing ‘woke’ about Boots. It also didn’t portray the military in a very negative way. I’m so disappointed it was canceled.”
Star Miles Heizer shared his feelings in an Instagram post, describing the sadness and disappointment of not being able to continue the story.
Is ‘Boots’ worth watching on Netflix?
Despite the cancellation of Boots, the series is still a good binge-watch, as long as you don’t mind having a few unresolved plot points at the end of it. While there were clearly plans for where the series could go next, it seems that fans will never get to see the military boot camp story play out, but sometimes it is about the journey, not the ending, and if you are someone who doesn’t need everything to come to a definitive conclusion, then you will probably find plenty to like in binging the series before Netflix potentially remove it entirely in the future.
What makes the show’s cancellation even more of a kicker is that despite Netflix being responsible for “saving” shows like Lucifer and Manifest, their exclusivity clauses will most likely mean that even if the cast and crew wanted to continue the series with another streamer, it is just unfortunately not going to happen.
