Despite a much-agreed decline overall, Netflix has a lot to offer action movie fans, with one of the streamer’s most exciting new action heroes continuing to find an audience. The popular platform has excelled in the realm of action over the last few years, earning critical acclaim for the likes of Rebel Ridge, adding a new festive favorite in Carry-On, and bringing in all manner of action movie mayhem from across the globe thanks to the likes of Ad Vitam, Exterritorial, and more.
One of Netflix’s most recent, and clearly most popular, forays into action finds a man with a particular set of violent skills embarking on a dangerous rescue mission. Written and directed by Antoine Blossier (Prey), and finding professional MMA fighter Ciryl Gane (Den of Thieves: Pantera) in the lead as a fighter taking a shot at redemption, the rest of the cast includes Alice Belaïdi, Faued Nabba, Maleaume Paquin, Anne Azoulay, Ibrahima Keita, Samuel Jouy, and Virgile Bramly.
The action outing in question is K.O., and it’s proven to be another big hit for the streamer as it now counts its eighth week in Netflix’s “Global Top 10 Non-English Movies.” You can check out the official synopsis for this martial arts action extravaganza below.
“Bastien (Ciryl Gane) has lived as a recluse ever since he accidentally killed his opponent Enzo in an MMA fight three years ago. Enzo’s widow tracks him down and asks for his help: Bastien is her only hope of rescuing Léo (Maleaume Paquin), her teenage son who has gone missing in the northern districts of Marseille.
Bastien sets off looking for him. Along the way, he meets Kenza (Alice Belaïdi), a young cop who is prepared to do anything to bring down the new crime lords of Marseille. Léo is in grave danger and time is of the essence.”
‘K.O.’ Has Been Declared “Absolute Cinema”
While not enough reviews have emerged on Rotten Tomatoes for an overall rating, hence making the action movie an underrated gem, many of the reactions that have emerged tease a hard-hitting action flick that’s well worth your time. Casey Chong of Casey’s Movie Mania called K.O. a “visceral action thriller,” while Pramit Chatterjee of Digital Mafia Talkies concluded that “since K.O. has a killer club brawl and a healthy dose of violent retribution, I had no choice but to turn into that Martin Scorsese meme and say, “Absolute cinema.” Jonathon Wilson of Ready Steady Cut, meanwhile, praised director Antoine Blossier for favoring “wide, clear shots, and the fights benefit from not having been edited to pulp or distractingly embellished with visual effects. If there’s a reason to watch K.O., this is it.”
Audiences also found much to enjoy, with this Rotten Tomatoes user applauding the action hero prowess of Cyril Gane calling him “the star here,” before adding, “I’m betting he’ll be brought back for another bash-’em and trash-’em.” Another user and fan stated, “I am neither a film critic nor an expert on films. But I do know a good action thriller when I see one. And this is it!” While another asked “Why can’t all movies be this good?”
