While Taylor Sheridan has ruined the name Yellowstone for everyone – because it will forever be associated with his Western universe – that hasn’t stopped it appearing in the title of a movie on the Netflix Top 10 in the last few days – although those hoping for a new chapter in the Western saga will be disappointed. After being completely bypassed in theaters, and getting a solid panning by critics, 2022 movie Murder at Yellowstone City
is currently riding high in the Netflix
chart.
While it is not unusual to see heavily criticized and forgotten movies getting another shot at glory on streaming, this particular appearance is just as likely to be boosted by one algorithm or another pushing the movie thanks to the big, bold “Yellowstone” in its title. After all, computers are logical, but don’t have much common sense to know when a name doesn’t actually mean what it thinks it does.

Viewers clicking on Murder at Yellowstone City will not be delivered the sweeping, drama-filled Western stories of the Dutton family that have been juggernauts on Paramount+ in the last few years, and instead will get a talky whodunnit mystery that doesn’t seem to be scratching the itch of anyone, let along those who stumble upon it expecting something completely different.
What is ‘Murder at Yellowstone City’ About?
Directed by Richard Gray and set in 1881, Murder at Yellowstone City places viewers in a dust-choked ghost town run by a preacher-mayor, played by Gabriel Bryne, that was once a thriving gold camp. Following the death of a miner who finally taps into a lucrative gold vein, the task of finding out who is responsible becomes the focus of the movie. The full synopsis reads:
“The once peaceful and booming Yellowstone City has fallen on hard times, but when a local prospector strikes gold, things seem to be turning around. Any hope is soon shattered when the prospector is found dead and the Sheriff quickly arrests a mysterious newcomer. But nothing is so simple in this sleepy western town, and more than a few of the locals have secrets to keep and reasons to kill. As the brutal murders continue, pitting neighbor against neighbor, Yellowstone City goes down a bloody path to a final showdown that not all will survive.”
While the premise sounds like a winner, especially with its impressive cast that also includes Thomas Jane, Isaiah Mustafa, Anna Camp, and Richard Dreyfuss, the film only scored 24% on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. For many critics, the film completely wastes its cast in a “slow-paced story” that more often than not delivers “embarrassment” over any kind of thrills or engagement. Audience reviews were not much kinder, with most calling out the predictability of the movie, and some even noting that the only thing good about it is the scenery, leading to a “rotten” 55% rating.
