Masters of the Universe is set to bring the 80s cartoon series and toy line to life in a much more faithful way than Dolph Lundgren’s 1987 movie. While that cult classic featured a version of the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, her role in the movie was quite limited and did not deliver the character many fans of the animated series were used to. That could well change when Morena Baccarin takes on the role in Travis Knight’s reboot of the franchise.
Baccarin, who has been part of the Deadpool franchise for a decade and recently starred in the Fire Country spinoff series Sheriff Country, is set to appear in the action sequel Greenland 2: Migration with Gerard Butler. While speaking about the January release with MovieWeb, Baccarin was asked about her upcoming Masters of the Universe appearance, which she said is “a total bucket list moment.”
“[The Sorceress is] just another notch in the belt of my career. I don’t think she’s similar to anything I’ve ever played before. I did some movement training and some wire work. But a lot of it’s gonna be done in post, and in effect.
It was just a total bucket list moment to participate in a franchise that I grew up watching, That was just like, I had to pinch myself several times. And I think Nicholas Galitzine is going to be incredible as He-Man. You know, people are going to be pleasantly surprised and have a great time watching the film. Yeah, I’m excited for you to be able to see it.”
‘Masters of the Universe’ Looks Set to Please Long-Term He-Man Fans
Fans have waited a long time to see He-Man and Skeletor duke it out again in a live-action movie, and considering the many changes made to the lore of the 1987 movie, next year’s release is really the first time the classic He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon has been adapted to the big screen in a faithful way.
Ahead of the trailer’s release, which is expected very soon, a select group of fans that have already seen the trailer and the movie at a secret screening have been full of praise for what Travis Knight has done with the property. There have been plenty of comments made about the look of the film taking its cues directly from the cartoon series, something that was confirmed by the presence of Cringer in the film.
He-Man’s cowardly tiger companion, who becomes the fearsome Battle Cat when Prince Adam calls on the Power of Grayskull, was notably missing from Dolph Lundgren’s movie, so his inclusion here is something that has definitely added to the nostalgia-driven hype surrounding the film. While the summer of 2026 is crowded with several blockbuster movies, there is a good chance that Masters of the Universe could be a dark horse among the likes of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Mandalorian & Grogu.
