Many viewers are still desperately missing Peaky Blinders, the hit British crime family drama that took the world by storm, but for those looking for a good follow-up, Guy Ritchie’s MobLand is a great replacement. With the Peaky Blinders movie still a while away, audiences are seeking out another show that ticks the same boxes. Throughout its 6-season run, Peaky Blinders grips viewers with its focus on the Shelby crime family, who are led by Cillian Murphy as the iconic Tommy Shelby.
While Peaky Blinders‘ true story inspirations are endearing, the fictional elements are just as interesting, and that’s why the show is such a success. However, following the release of MobLand earlier this year, it now seems that Peaky Blinders has a new rival. MobLand is another brilliant British crime drama that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats, and it shares several parallels with Peaky Blinders, too.
Why Guy Ritchie’s ‘MobLand’ is the Perfect ‘Peaky Blinders’ Follow-Up
MobLand focuses on the Harrigans, an Irish crime family, and their ongoing conflict with the Stevensons, a story arc that any Peaky Blinders viewer will find interesting. MobLand‘s cast is nothing short of stellar, with the likes of Tom Hardy (Peaky Blinders‘ Alfie Solomons) as fixer Harry Da Souza, Pierce Brosnan as patriarch Conrad Harrigan, and Helen Mirren as his wife, Maeve. There are also some other Peaky Blinders crossovers within the cast and crew, too, like director Anthony Byrne and actors Paddy Considine and Emmett J. Scanlan, who respectively portrayed Father John Hughes and Billy Grade, for example.
While MobLand is set in the present day, unlike Peaky Blinders, there is just as much scheming, barbarity, and intrigue. Audiences are thrown into the seedy underbelly of London’s criminal world, and immediately, it makes them feel as if they are right there with the characters. There is such a prominent need for these characters to keep their focus on their jobs that their personal lives often fall to the wayside, and this plays a big part in MobLand‘s Season 1 cliffhanger. This nail-biting watch definitely highlights the ruthlessness of being a part of a crime family, even if everyone doesn’t share the same surname, something Peaky Blinders is all too familiar with.
Of course, MobLand isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty solid for a first installment. One of MobLand‘s biggest criticisms is Pierce Brosnan’s Irish accent, but as critiques go, it could be a lot worse. Guy Ritchie brings his filmmaking experiences from classics like The Gentlemen and Snatch to MobLand brilliantly, and it’s quickly apparent that this is a project of his. One great thing about MobLand for viewers who are missing Peaky Blinders, however, is that the show isn’t over yet.
A recent update has revealed that MobLand Season 2 is set to start shooting soon, although Paramount+ has yet to reveal when we should expect to see it on our screens. Audiences can’t wait to see what happens to the Harrigan empire next, or to see the fallout of Harry’s shocking cliffhanger.
