Michael B. Jordan Offers Positive Update on ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’

Filmmaker and actor Michael B. Jordan gave fans a promising update on one of his more anticipated projects, confirming that his take on The Thomas Crown Affair is moving along like a “dream” and that this remake is set to wrap filming before the end of the month. Earlier this year, the actor pulled double duty on screen by playing twins in Sinners, and with The Thomas Crown Affair, the actor is pulling a different type of double duty, as he’s not just starring in it, he’s also directing it. Also starring in the film are Adria Arjona, Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk, and Aiysha Hart.

Jordan offered the update on the film in a chat with Vanity Fair, in which he revealed:

“It’s a tough process, but moments that I’ve imagined in my head for a decade are now being brought to life with a cast that I’m extremely happy to have and really proud of. I’m living a dream, honestly.”

This new The Thomas Crown Affair is expected to be released in 2027.

The original The Thomas Crown Affair landed in theaters back in 1968, which starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, and was directed by Norman Jewison. The movie follows an investigator (Dunaway) who is tasked with tracking down the culprit behind a number of high-profile heists. When she identifies Thomas Crown (McQueen) as the most likely suspect, the pair engage in a romantically charged relationship in which the investigator is torn between bringing the thief to justice and embracing her feelings for the debonair criminal.

The star power and charisma between McQueen and Dunaway were the highlights of the film when it was released, even if the story itself was a bit predictable and pulpy. In 1999, a remake was released starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo in the roles previously played by McQueen and Dunaway, respectively. That take on the material similarly earned a somewhat positive reaction, due largely to the chemistry between the leads.

Details of Jordan’s take on the concept have been kept under wraps, with the movie being scripted by Iron Man 3 and The Fall Guy‘s Drew Pearce. Before Arjona joined the project, Taylor Russell (Bones and All) was cast as the film’s lead, though ended up departing the project over creative differences. No word has emerged on what caused the actor’s exit, but with Russell being announced to star in a remake of Single White Female alongside Jenna Ortega earlier this year, the actor still has some exciting projects on the horizon.

Jordan first started expressing his interest in a new The Thomas Crown Affair as far back as 2016, with the project seeing its fair share of obstacles in the years since. Back in 2023, Jordan made his directing debut with Creed III.
