Tatiana Maslany is no stranger to being subjected to backlash thanks to her divisive role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series that was released in 2022. However, she is now the one causing ripples after calling for fans to cancel their Disney+, Hulu and ESPN subscriptions to show support for Jimmy Kimmel following the shelving of his show on Wednesday. Jimmy Kimmel Live! was revealed to be going into an indefinite state of suspension for the foreseeable future after the host’s comments in relation to Charlie Kirk’s shooting caused outrage, not least with President Donald Trump.
In an Instagram story, Maslany urged followers to “cancel your Disney+, Hulu and ESPN subscriptions,” in protest of Kimmel’s treatment. Maslany, whose MCU future as She-Hulk has not been confirmed, joins several others who have condemned the decision for Kimmel to be “silenced,” and laid down their own bold statements in the last 24 hours.
According to a number of outlets, Disney executives are preparing to meet with Kimmel to discuss the future of his show, but earlier today it was reported that Kimmel is looking to end his contract with ABC in light of the controversy surrounding the Monday edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, during which he said of Kirk’s murder:
“The MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it. In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”
Maslany’s public support of Kimmel sees her join Lost and Lanterns creator Damon Lindelof, who shared his own damning view of Disney’s handling of the situation on his social media account. He wrote earlier today:
“I was shocked, saddened and infuriated by yesterday’s suspension and look forward to it being lifted soon. If it isn’t, I can’t in good conscience work for the company that imposed it. If you’re about to fire up in my comments, just ask yourself if you know the difference between hate speech and a joke. I think you still do. And Jimmy? You’ve ALWAYS known what you were doing.”
Pedro Pascal also shared an image his appearance on Kimmel’s talk show, writing that he is backing Kimmel and calling to “Defend #FreeSpeech” and “#DEMOCRACY.”
One of the only people not to speak publicly on the matter so far is Kimmel himself, but it is only a matter of time until the man who has become the subject of so many social media conversations, protests, and outrage breaks his silence.
There are very few controversial moments that get by social media without an extensive number of posts, comments and arguments. When it was announced on Wednesday that Kimmel’s show was being pulled from its usual slot on ABC, the reaction was instantaneous. From stars like Ben Stiller who could not believe the way Kimmel had been shelved for a comment that, as some sources claimed, was seen as tame even by the board of executives who made the decision, to others such as James Woods, who celebrated the “downfall” of the host.
Even President Trump was not shy in crowing about the fact that his nemesis had been taken off-air, and also appeared to suggest that others could well follow. How the story ends is yet to be seen, but it is clear that this particular story had a long way to run before the twists and turns are all played out.
