The media love nothing more than creating time-saving nicknames for celebrities. From Brangelina to Bennifer, there is nothing like a catchy way of mentioning a name without going to the effort of taking a couple of extra seconds. But what do the stars think of this truncation? When it comes to ScarJo, better known as Marvel and Jurassic World franchise star Scarlett Johansson, you probably shouldn’t call her it to her face.
Johansson is integrating herself into some pretty big movie franchises in the coming years, seemingly continuing her dino-evading journey in a new Jurassic World movie, leading Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist movie, and now also landing a role in The Batman Part II. While appearing on The Today Show’s Today with Jenna & Friends, host Jenna Bush Hager happened to mention the media nickname of the actress, which gained a curt reaction.
“I hate that name. It’s nothing anybody ever called me when I was growing up. Nobody in my life calls me that. So if somebody calls me that, I immediately am like, ‘You don’t know me.’”
While Johansson joked that Jennifer Lopez’s purposeful truncation of her name to JLO was perhaps to blame, as she first remembers “ScarJo” becoming a thing around the same time. While JLO may be happy to go by the name she formed herself, perhaps it is best that you continue to take the time to say Johansson’s full name when addressing her.
Scarlett Johansson Has Many Roles Lined Up
Scarlett Johansson became a household name playing Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but her prominence in Hollywood started long before she slipped into the leather pants of Natasha Romanoff for several movies. Since leaving the MCU, the actress has continued to impress, working with directors such as Wes Anderson on Asteroid City and The Phoenician Scheme, and Taika Waititi on Jojo Rabbit.
Recently, she added the Transformers franchise to her many big movie roles, providing a voice alongside former MCU costar Chris Hemsworth in the animated Transformers One, as well as revitalizing the Jurassic World franchise again this past summer. The next few years are going to be just as busy. She was announced last week to be joining The Exorcist reboot, which will be looking to put the disappointment of David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer in the past, and subsequently, it was announced that she will also be taking on a mystery role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. While there have been no further details revealed about either of these roles, it seems that Johansson is ready to slip away from some of the more arty movies she has been involved in to indulge in blockbusters for a little while.
Next, Johansson is expected to appear with Miles Teller and Adam Driver in James Gray-directed Paper Tiger, a movie about two brothers whose pursuit of the “American Dream” leads them into the dangerous world of the Russian Mafia. The film does not have a release date, but is currently in post-production.
