Mauricio Pochettino denies reports he interviewed for Brentford job

A day before the United States Men’s National Team take the field in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinals, their head coach is at the center of some head coaching news. Earlier this afternoon, reports out of Ireland suggested that Mauricio Pochettino, who became the USMNT head coach last September, recently interviewed for the vacant head coaching job at English club Brentford. However, Pochettino told Fox Sports’ Doug McIntyre that he was never contacted about the job.

The initial reports about Pochettino interviewing for the Brentford job came from David Sneyd of Irish outlet The 42. Sneyd didn’t give a timeline on when that interview took place, but just listed the Argentine as one of the coaches that had been interviewed by the club.

That news took the internet by storm, as the team was in final preparations for their quarterfinal match against Costa Rica that takes place tomorrow evening. However, Doug McIntyre of Fox Sports spoke directly to the USMNT head coach and reports that Pochettino denied that he had been in talks with Brentford over their vacant position, which has since been filled.

Asked Mauricio Pochettino about today’s report that he interviewed with Premier League Brentford. “This club never contacted me,” the #USMNT coach told me on the eve of the Gold Cup quarters. “I never talked to them.”

A report out of Ireland on Saturday stating that U.S. men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino recently interviewed for the since-filled Premier League vacancy at Brentford is false, Pochettino exclusively told me.

“This club never contacted me…I never talked to them,” Pochettino told McIntyre regarding the rumors.

These aren’t the first coaching rumors that involved Pochettino this month. Two weeks ago, Pochettino was rumored to be one of the targets for his former club Tottenham Hotspur after they fired Ange Postecoglou. Pochettino said that a move back to North London for another stint at Spurs was “not realistic.” Tottenham went on to hire Thomas Frank away from Brentford, which ironically created the vacant position that was the source of these rumors.

So, Pochettino remains the head coach of the United States Men’s National Team. The team will play Costa Rica in the Gold Cup quarterfinals tomorrow night at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
