Mateu Alemany remains a well-liked figure in the FC Barcelona sphere for the work he did as the team’s sporting director during a period when the team’s hands were completely tied due to Financial Fair Play regulations.
Having left the club in 2023, when Deco took over, Alemany returned to the Spotify Camp Nou last night, with the Spaniard now the director of football at Atletico Madrid.
Alemany reconnected with several familiar faces on his return to Camp Nou. He sat next to RFEF president Rafael Louzan and Barcelona president Joan Laporta and used the visit to greet former board members.
He was also seen speaking warmly with several Barça players with whom he had worked daily at the Ciutat Esportiva.
Alemany on Barcelona’s interest in Julian Alvarez
Before the match, which Atletico Madrid ended up losing 3-1, Alemany was asked about the rumours of Barcelona being interested in Julian Alvarez.
The Rojiblancos sporting director denied knowledge of the Blaugrana’s interest in the Argentine international, while stating that the player was very happy at the club.
“No, I have absolutely no knowledge that he is being courted by Barcelona. He is a very important player, very important for the team, for the club, and I know for a fact that he is very happy with us,” said Alemany.
Amid reports suggesting that he was already working on a new contract for Alvarez, Alemany remarked: “We are perfect, he has a five-year contract.”
Laporta’s dream
Despite the firmness of Alemany’s statements, Alvarez remains one of Barcelona chief Laporta’s dream targets for 2026. His signing, however, appears very complicated due to the club’s delicate financial situation.
After all, Alvarez has a market value of €100 million, but his release clause stands at €500 million, and his contract runs until 2030.
This makes any operation almost impossible and allows Atletico to remain calm in the face of possible attempts by Barça or other clubs.
