Marvel just debuted the greatest Ghost Rider since the character was first introduced, replacing the eldritch antihero’s hellcycle motorbike with something even cooler. See it below…
Ultimate Ghost Rider Is Riding Cerberus In New Art
Marvel just officially debuted its new Ghost Rider, Penance – a freedom fighter who sold their soul to bring down a fascist regime, and received not just Ghost Rider’s classic powers, but the three-headed hellhound Cerberus in the bargain. The character is first seen in a preview of The Ultimates #21, from Deniz Vamp and Pere Pérez.
In the issue, Luke Cage unleashes his Avengers – heroes kidnapped and imprisoned by the Maker’s regime, in torturous gulags run by this world’s AIM. Multiple new heroes are introduced, but the gun-toting new Ghost RIder is the star of the show, encouraging his gigantic hound to consume the Maker’s “rent-a-racists, mutant assassins and sunscreen-slathered conscripts from Da Costa’s vassal Vampire Nation.”
This isn’t the fist blue Ghost Rider – Marvel’s mainstream Danny Ketch has spent time with a blue flame in the past, indicating his Hellfire burns even hotter than original Spirit of Vengeance Johnny Blaze.
In current Ultimate Universe comics, the final battle against the Maker’s regime has begun, and uprisings have sprung up across America.
While War Machine fights for Detroit and Iron Lad takes the fight to the Maker’s fortress, Luke Cage’s Avengers are the forefront of the superpowered resistance. And because the Maker made it a point to lock up every potential superhero who could stand against, Luke’s army boasts new versions of Marvel’s best and brightest.
Penance Isn’t the Only New Ghost Rider This Issue Delivers
As in mainstream Marvel lore, Penance isn’t the only Ghost Rider active. Dike Ruan’s cover shows another Ghost RIder with a pink flame standing behind Luke Cage, suggesting the issue will deliver another new take on the Spirit of Vengeance.
One of the major pleasures of Marvel’s Ultimate line has been seeing iconic heroes reinvented, with everyone from the first Human Torch to the Incredible Hulk receiving a new look and, in some cases, switching sides to support the Maker’s regime.
However, none have received an update as extreme as Ghost Rider sitting atop the mythical Hound of Hades, firing bullets from a Hellfire-infused machine gun. It’s an awesome spectacle, and just the latest in The Ultimates‘ successful gambit to make the final battle against the Maker as cinematic as possible.
The Ultimates #21 is available February 25 from Marvel Comics.
