Mark Wahlberg’s Action Thriller ‘Max Payne’ Is Streaming Free Next Month

While big-screen video game adaptations have undergone something of a renaissance in the last few years, Mark Wahlberg’s panned 2008 action effort is headed to free streaming to remind us of how bad things used to be. Based on the franchise of the same name by Remedy Entertainment and published by Rockstar Games, Max Payne

finds Wahlberg taking the lead as a cop with revenge in mind after his family is murdered.

Directed and co-produced by John Moore and written by Beau Thorne, the neo-noir action thriller stars Mark Wahlberg as the title character alongside Mila Kunis, Ludacris, Beau Bridges, Chris O’Donnell, Donal Logue, and Amaury Nolasco. Max Payne is all set to hit free streaming platform Tubi

on April 1, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

Mark Wahlberg Is Woefully Miscast as the Video Game Antihero

Despite Mark Wahlberg’s best efforts, the actor is woefully miscast as the noirish antihero Max Payne. And, despite the video game’s near-constant use of “bullet time,” the effect is woefully absent from the live-action adaptation. Indeed, “woeful” should have been emblazoned on all the Max Payne posters. All of which is reflected in the 16% Rotten Tomatoes score (29% from audiences). However, looking through the murky cinematic mess and squinting at the bright side, Max Payne does boast some stylish action sequences which are worth checking out (especially for free).

While there were no doubt plans for Max Payne to launch a new action franchise, with the video game series having spawned the sequels Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne and Max Payne 3, the response to the first movie would have killed those plans stone dead. However, it was revealed back in 2022 that a reboot is now in the works at 20th Century Studios.

Mark Wahlberg continues to throw himself into the action, recently taking on villain duties for director Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk. However, while Walberg commits himself to the role of a hitman posing as a pilot in order to kill a mob informant, Flight Risk sadly saw the actor once again crash and burn with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Oscar-nominated actor has several action projects in the pipeline, including taking on a role previously played by both Mel Gibson and action movie icon Jason Statham – that of the enigmatic Parker – in the upcoming crime thriller Play Dirty; will return for the action sequel The Family Plan 2 on Apple TV+; id due to star alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Molly Shannon, Eva De Dominici, Benjamin Bratt, Daniela Melchior, Eric André and Chelsey Crisp in director Peter Farrelly’s action-comedy Balls Up; and will lead the long-gestating reboot of the beloved 70s action series The Six Million Dollar Man.
