It has been a big transfer deadline day for Liverpool with deals agreed for Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi, while Harvey Elliott is on his way to Aston Villa.
Isak medical complete and Guehi deal in jeopardy
Liverpool agreed deals for Isak (£125 million) and Guehi (£35 million) on deadline day and both have successfully undergone their medicals on Merseyside and in London, respectively.
The Isak saga now only has the official club announcement before it is all over, at long last, but Guehi’s signing has hit a late snag at Palace’s end.
The Guardian‘s Ed Aarons, a reliable source, states that Palace decided against Igor Julio’s signing due to an issue with his medical and he is now set to join West Ham.
He adds that Guehi’s move to Liverpool is “still expected to go ahead as things stand,” even with Palace needing to find a replacement before the 7pm deadline.
The Athletic‘s David Ornstein, however, reports the move is “in jeopardy” as talks between Guehi and Oliver Glasner take place – we know where the latter stands!
If this all works out as it should, this window has been a strategic masterpiece from Liverpool.
Harvey Elliott to join Aston Villa
• Elliott has had a loan-to-buy deal agreed with Aston Villa – fee will be worth £35 million when it becomes permanent next summer. He made 149 appearances for Liverpool. All the best, Harvey!
• Joe Gomez expected to stay at Anfield with little time to arrange a move elsewhere, that is with or without Guehi’s arrival (The Athletic)
• No longer a Liverpool player, but ex-academy graduate Harry Wilson is attracting late interest from Leeds – it would give him the game time he surely wants and needs
Non-Liverpool Transfer News
• Ibrahima Konate has reported for France duty but requires further tests on the issue he picked up against Arsenal; Hugo Ekitike has also earned his first call up after injury to Rayan Cherki
• James Milner scored his first goal since 2019 against Man City and dedicated it to Diogo Jota, whose shirt number he now wears at Brighton.
• Arne Slot had plenty of praise for Dominik Szoboszlai‘s latest outing at right-back, saying “he understands what a Liverpool player should look like.” A right-back that scores and works hard, we love to see it.
Headline deadline day deals in the Premier League
• Arsenal: Piero Hincapie arrives on loan with an option to buy worth £45m – is this the right time to mention Arsenal‘s net spend in relation to ours…
• Newcastle: Finally got their second striker in Yoane Wissa for £55 million, wonder if the plan is also for him play next to Isak and Ekitike…
• Chelsea: Loan signing of Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton – feels like a money laundering move! Nicolas Jackson, meanwhile, will get his move to Bayern and surely happy to never speak of Chelsea again
• Man United: They’ve forced Kobbie Mainoo to stay against his wishes and they have a new goalkeeper, agreeing a £18.1m deal for Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens.
• Man City: The big one is they agreed to send Ederson to Fenerbahce for £12.1m on the contingency of Gianluigi Donnarumma arriving from PSG. Poor James Trafford.
• Aston Villa: Emiliano Martinez is to stay at the club despite what was an emotional farewell last season – strange no club wanted the world’s best ‘keeper…
Liverpool FC: On this day
On this day in 2023, Liverpool signed Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich in a deal worth £34.3 million – and it proved quite the steal!
He did not have the most memorable first seasons, but he blossomed under Arne Slot as his No. 6 and deservedly won the Premier League‘s Young Player of the Year award to go with his winner’s medal.
Liverpool’s plan was to sign Martin Zubimendi last summer but his rejection was the gift we didn’t know we needed at the time, with Gravenberch thriving with the responsibility bestowed upon him.
Can’t say we weren’t displeased to see Zubimendi struggle at Anfield on Sunday!
