The Mandalorian was the first-ever live-action Star Wars TV show. It kicked off in 2019, introducing the world to Mandalorian warrior Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his pint-sized protégé Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, the cutest 50-year-old infant to ever wield the Force. People loved the show immediately. The second season came out in 2020 and also went over pretty well. Then fans were in for a three-year wait for season 3, which let many down.
Now, three years after that, Disney is going to wrap up Din and Grogu’s story with a movie: The Mandalorian and Grogu. We already got a trailer for the film back in September, and we knew it would be among those movies and TV shows that would get a TV spot during the 2026 Super Bowl. Some fans were hoping for a longer, more robust trailer. Would they get it?
Not so much. In the ad, we see Din Djarin and Grogu riding in a levitating sleigh being pulled by Tauntauns, beasts of burden native to the ice planet of Hoth. Actor Sam Elliott, star of everything from The Big Lebowski to A Star Is Born to the Yellowstone prequel 1883, provides some inspirational narration. “We keep forward,” he says, “driven by a deeper purpose, guided by an unseen Force.” Get it?

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Has a Lot Riding on It
This seems less like a trailer and more like an original spot timed to go up during the Winter Olympics, another major sporting event that just so happens to be going on at the moment. We don’t know if Sam Elliott is actually going to be in the movie in some capacity or if he’s just lending his voice to this commercial.
We know very little about the plot of The Mandalorian and Grogu in general, expect that it will be set after The Mandalorian season 3 and star the two title characters. We do know that Sigourney Weaver, lately of Avatar: Fire and Ash, will appear as Colonel Ward, a high-ranking officer in the New Republic. And The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White will appear as Rotta the Hutt, son of the late Jabba the Hutt.
Everything We Know About ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’
There might be few details about the upcoming film, but fans couldn’t be more excited about the next Mando and Grogu adventure.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will open on May 22, 2026. It’ll be the first Star Wars movie released in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which means there’s a lot of pressure on it to perform. After that, Disney will try and get back into the swing of making regular Star Wars movies with Star Wars: Starfighter, which is due out on May 28, 2027. Starfighter stars Ryan Gosling and is set some five years after the end of The Rise of Skywalker. The Mandalorian and Grogu, on the other hand, is set years after the end of the original Star Wars trilogy but years before the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Are these movies what the Star Wars franchise needs to capture the public’s imagination again? We’ll be watching, and in the meantime, expect a lot more teases between now and May.
