Luis Suarez appears to spit at Seattle staff member as Lionel Messi and Inter Miami lose Leagues Cup final

Luis Suarez appears to spit at Seattle staff member as Lionel Messi and Inter Miami lose Leagues Cup final

Luis Suarez could be facing a lengthy suspension after appearing to spit on a member of the Seattle Sounders coaching staff as Inter Miami’s bid to win the Leagues Cup ended in defeat and disorder.

Suarez clashed with the Sounders staffer after his side were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in the final at Lumen Field with a Leagues Cup spokesperson telling AP there would be a review of the incident.

It was a sour ending to a miserable night for Lionel Messi and Co with Seattle winning thanks to goals from Osaze De Rosario and Paul Rothrock either side of an Alex Roldan penalty.

Misery for Messi but joy for Seattle and Schmetzer

The home side’s fans celebrated wildly with coach Brian Schmetzer adding another trophy to a haul that already includes two MLS Cups and the CONCACAF Champions League.

“We’re very pleased with the result,” Schmetzer said. “I think the guys again dug down deep because at 1-0 the game could have gone either way. They were putting a lot of pressure on us, and that second goal helped us relieve the pressure.

“And then you couldn’t ask for a more storybook ending for Paul [Rothrock] to score the third goal. So obviously, everybody in the stands is happy, and you know, it’s a great day to be a Sounder.”

Messi’s miss crucial as Miami beaten

Miami had their chances, Messi blasting over from close range early in the second half and Tadeo Allende shooting wide with only home keeper Andy Thomas to beat.

Both opportunities came and went with the score at 1-0 and the Floridians’ frustration boiled over as two late goals saw Seattle home.

Schmetzer added: “Unfortunately, that [the incident involving Suarez] is going to take some of the attention away from a great performance by the Seattle Sounders.

“Their players were frustrated and that led to some things happening on the field that shouldn’t happen on the field.

“I’m going to shut that down, because that shouldn’t be the story. The story of the game is not what happened after the game. I had a quiet moment with Messi on the field [after the game] and we talked and we tried to push it aside.”

Suarez has record of ill-discipline

Suarez has previous for clashing with opposition players and staff.

In 2010, while at Ajax, he was given a seven-game ban for biting Feyenoord midfielder Otman Bakkal and, three years later, a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic when playing for Liverpool.

In July 2014, former Uruguay international Suarez was banned from all football for four months after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup in Brazil.
