Romance anime series can be some of the most heart-warming in the entire art form. There are a ton of different ways in which a series can portray its narrative, and each variation makes the genre as a whole refreshing and inviting. Out of all the best romance anime around, however, there’s one love story that might not be as desirable as it seems.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War is undoubtedly one of the best romance anime ever made. The anime is hilarious, endearing, and intelligent all at once, beautifully combining both the romance and comedy genres into one succinct show. Kaguya’s romance with Shirogane, however, might be more exhausting than most people realize.
Romance Anime Series Are Amazing
Horimiya, Blue Box, The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity
Most Westerners watch anime for the best shōnen series around, and they can’t be faulted for it. Shōnen is a gripping genre that doesn’t require much thinking. Instead, fans can sit back and watch incredibly powerful characters fight over what they care about most.
Romance is a genre of anime overlooked by most anime fans in America, and it absolutely shouldn’t be. In fairness, the romance genre used to be associated with tired tropes, boring characters, and love stories that just didn’t make sense.
Modern romance anime has fixed all of these tropes, and some romance series can be considered some of the best anime in general. These stories are filled with amazing couples, people learning about love, and intriguing worlds just waiting to be explored.
There are a ton of great romance anime series for both veterans and amateurs of the genre. Series like Horimiya, Blue Box, and more are ripe for the picking, depicting realistic romances and great characters that are almost too lovable.
There Are a Ton of Different Types of Romance Anime
Pure Romance, Romantic Comedies, and Many More
Romance is a big genre of anime. There are a ton of great subgenres that exist within it, giving even the biggest romance anime lover plenty of variation to check out. Within the romance anime genre, there are comedic romance series, straightforward love stories, coming of age stories, and a ton more.
Series like A Sign of Affection showcase love at its purest form. There are plenty of funny moments in the series, but that’s not what it’s really about. A Sign of Affection is about two people learning more about each other, about themselves, and about the future they want to create.
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You is the exact opposite. It’s a silly, affable series that never takes itself too seriously. It’s a funny romance series that pokes fun at the romance anime while existing within it, establishing a fun narrative great for people who want to laugh at a ridiculous premise.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War Is One of the Best Romance Anime Ever
It’s Unquestionably Top-Tier
Out of every romance anime ever released, there are few quite as good as Kaguya-sama: Love is War. The story itself is gripping right away, and production studio A-1 Pictures knocked it out of the park bringing this anime to life.
The story is fairly complicated for a romance anime, and that’s not a bad thing. Kaguya and Shirogane are the two smartest characters in their school (and two of the smartest characters in anime). They both have romantic feelings for one another, but they don’t want to be the first to confess, leading to the titular war of love.
It’s a hilarious series that doesn’t get too goofy. It’s grounded when it needs to be, and it also has some of the best side characters in anime. Characters like Chika Fujiwara, Yu Ishigami, and Ai Hayasaka add a lot to the series every time that they’re on-screen, making the world of Kaguya-sama feel richer and livelier.
Kaguya-sama’s Love Story Is Exhausting
There’s Too Much Effort For One Romance
Even though Kaguya-sama is undoubtedly a great anime series, there’s no way anyone would want to be in either of the main characters’ shoes. Most romance anime series are incredibly straightforward, featuring two characters that eventually fall in love with one another after a few relatively small obstacles.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War is the most intellectual, methodical, and anti-practical romance anime ever made, and that’s why it works as a series. Both characters are working hard to be one step ahead of the other, but in real life, that would be exhausting. Most characters just confess to one another while Kaguya and Shirogane are trying to trick each other into confessing.
Horimiya might be the best romance anime ever made because (spoiler alert) the main characters become a couple within six episodes. Kaguya and Shirogane kissed in a spectacular moment well past the six episodes, and even then, they’re still at war with one another.
Kaguya-sama Is Great… To Watch
Nobody Would Want This Love Story to Be Their Own
Kaguya-sama will always be one of the titans of the romance genre. It’s a hilarious, heartfelt story that only gets better the longer it runs. Kaguya is one of the funniest main characters around, and her facial expressions are some of the best in the entire art form. With her trusty friends by her side, she might just be the one to win the war on love.
There are a ton of reasons to adore this series. It’s refreshing, captivating, and touching all at once. While it’s an amazing romance series, it’s much better to watch Kaguya and Shirogane’s relationship slowly unfold than to live it. Living this relationship would be exhausting, but maybe that’s why the two characters have so much chemistry.
In a way, they’re both willing to go above and beyond for one another. There probably aren’t any other characters in Kaguya-sama: Love is War quite as willing to dedicate themselves to this type of relationship, making Kaguya and Shirogane perfect for each other in a very high-maintenance way.
