Long-Awaited Disney Sequel 20 Years in the Making Finally Lands a Streaming Date

The family-friendly comedy sequel starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis is finally headed to streaming. Over 20 years in the making, the Disney film will be available for consumption at home on their popular streaming service.

Freakier Friday is set to stream on Disney+ on November 12. The long-awaited sequel debuted to positive critic reviews back in August, garnering a 74% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A follow-up to the 2003 film Freaky Friday, Curtis and Lohan reprised their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, respectively. The mother-daughter duo was not alone, however, as a new generation joined them in Freakier Friday, adding more body-switching chaos in the process.

In Freakier Friday, the original film’s concept is doubled down on by adding two daughters into the mix, which both Curtis and Lohan switch bodies with. The result is a hilarious and surprisingly emotional story that surpasses most legacy sequels. The cast also features Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Rosalind Chao, Chad Michael Murray, and Mark Harmon. The film was directed by Nisha Ganatra (The High Note) based on a screenplay from Jordan Weiss (Dollface). Read the official synopsis:

In the film, Curtis and Lohan reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman. The story picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.

Was ‘Freakier Friday’ a Box Office Success?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Whether a film was profitable is not something an audience member should consider when evaluating its quality, but comedies have struggled as of late at the box office. It’s a conversation that Naked Gun dealt with head-on, using the lack of comedies, especially successful ones, in theaters as a promotional strategy. For Freakier Friday, that wasn’t necessary, as the legacy sequel was able to become the highest-grossing comedy at the domestic box office for 2025.

After debuting at $28 million during its opening weekend, Freakier Friday went on to gross $94 million domestically and $153 million worldwide. With a $42 million budget, Disney was not only able to recoup the film’s costs, but the overall gross could mean more films could be made. Of course, not everything needs to be a franchise nowadays, but the studio is not known for backing down on profitable properties. Fortunately, no matter what Disney decides, audiences were treated to a truly hilarious sequel that did more than enough to warrant its existence.
