February 25 – International consumer rights organisation Euroconsumers and Football Supporters Europe have reiterated their call to FIFA to drop dynamic ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup.
The two lobby groups highlighted a recent interview by FIFA president Gianni Infantino with CNBC – during which Infantino confirmed the use dynamic ticket pricing for the World Cup – to call out the practice as “a revenue-maximisation experiment.” They argue that it raises serious questions about transparency, fairness and trust.
The groups demand that FIFA drops dynamic or variable pricing for World Cup tickets; sets transparent, fixed prices in advance; clearly communicates any pricing structure and safeguards; and engages meaningfully with consumer organisations and supporters’ groups before implementing such models.
FIFA has received major criticism for its 2026 World Cup ticketing policies, which include group stage tickets that are up to five times the price of those for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and dynamic ticket pricing. As a PR stunt to contend with widespread backlash, FIFA then introduced the ‘Supporter Entry Tier’, a very limited number of tickets priced at $60 for every game at the super-seized tournament.
FIFA has defended high ticket prices as market conform and pointed to variable pricing as a normal market mechanism in the US.
Last year, Euroconsumers and Football Supporters Europe wrote a joint-letter to FIFA to outline their grievances with the World Cup ticketing policies. The groups said they met with FIFA and received assurances that dynamic pricing would not be used.
Last month, the world federation said it had received 500 million ticket requests following its last ticket sales phase for the World Cup. In April, FIFA will launch a last-minute sales phase, which will operate on a first-come basis.
