Last season, under the new format, 16 points were enough to reach the top eight. Liverpool finished first in their group with 21 points but fell at the round-of-16 hurdle against Paris Saint Germain in the second leg via a penalty shootout at Anfield highlighting the fine margins at this level.
This season, the stakes are even higher. UEFA’s revamped rules now reward group positioning — teams finishing in the top four are guaranteed a home second leg in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, while the first- and second-placed sides enjoy home advantage in the semi-finals if they progress.
For Slot, this may influence squad rotation, tactical planning, and how he approaches the early group games, as every point an every goal carries more weight.
Liverpool’s history in Europe is unrivalled among English clubs. With six European Cup and Champions League titles to their name, the club has become synonymous with continental glory. Arne Slot’s side will have set their sights on a seventh European crown.
