Liverpool star reveals key turning point under Arne Slot

In-form Liverpool star Cody Gakpo highlighted the key point where the team believed in their title aspirations under Arne Slot. The Dutch international acknowledged that many pundits and football fans had lower expectations from the Reds amid the transition period.

The legendary manager Jurgen Klopp departed from Liverpool during the summer of 2024 with Slot succeeding as the head coach. Liverpool management only added Federico Chiesa as the summer signing to influence the current season under the Dutch head coach.

Many pundits believed that the transition along with the lacklustre transfer window would hamper any chances for the Reds to compete. However, the Reds showcased more balance under Slot’s style of play, adjusting easily and quickly to the new tactical demands.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has extracted the best out of the current squad despite a lack of transfer spending compared to rival clubs.

Liverpool’s attack continued to prosper under Slot despite the change that demanded more patience in the buildup to maintain the organization. Furthermore, the Dutch head coach demands a stern balance between the risk and reward factors which help the team dominate in every phase of the game, irrespective of the opponents.

Slot inherited a formidable squad from Klopp that includes intelligent players capable of adjusting according to their head coach’s demand. The Liverpool squad has also enjoyed a boost from the lack of changes within their personnel, allowing growth in chemistry.

Speaking in The Players’ Tribune (via Liverpoolfc.com), Gakpo acknowledged that many downplayed the potential of Liverpool to compete for the Premier League title under Slot this season. He said:

“I don’t think the outside world really expected much from us in the beginning of this season, if I’m being honest. Because last season’s story was we were great until the last 10 games, and then we messed it up. We knew we were close. We just needed a little bit more, but couldn’t get it. When we started pre-season, obviously a lot of guys weren’t here because we had the Euros and the Copa America. And when we played a friendly with the guys we had, you could see that we were still figuring it out. We weren’t used to this style yet. Then slowly but surely we really felt confident in how Slot wanted us to play.”

The 25-year-old added that the team realised their incredible potential after their dominant victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. He said:

“The first games we were flying. We beat Ipswich and Brentford. But when we went to Old Trafford and won 3–0, that was really the confirmation. Like, OK, we’re here. This can really be something. This process, of course, started under [Jürgen] Klopp. Now, Slot is building on that foundation. He’s a very down-to-earth manager. Very calm, composed. You can talk to him about football, life, anything. He’s so good tactically, and I think we fit well in his system.”

Gakpo has enjoyed sensational form under Slot, playing consistently as the left-attacking winger despite facing competition from Luis Diaz. Diaz has also displayed immense form despite sometimes playing as a central forward for the team.
