Paul Mitchell has left Newcastle United with immediate effect, departing his role earlier than expected following last month’s exit statement.
It was announced that our former sporting director would stay until the end of June before stepping down, but a Tuesday afternoon exclusive from The Mail’s Craig Hope reveals that he’s now gone.
As a result, Eddie Howe’s nephew – Andy Howe – will now step up and work alongside head of recruitment Steve Nickson to oversee our current transfer business, although plans to replace Mitchell are already underway.
Hope reveals that a new name is now ‘in the frame’, with Liverpool’s technical director Julian Ward now being looked at.
Recruitment firm Nolan Partners are currently overseeing the search for a new sporting director and interviews are due to take place, with Nottingham Forest’s Ross Wilson and Arsenal’s former assistant sporting director Jason Ayto set to be spoken to.
Ward, 44, has previously worked as a scout at Man City and an analyst in the Portugal set up, but has enjoyed an impressive rise at Anfield, moving from a scout, to a loan manager before taking up a sporting director role in 2022.
