Arne Slot provides insight into the three key attributes he seeks in the players to assess their worthiness to play for Liverpool. Slot succeeded legendary manager Jurgen Klopp and inherited a very strong squad, using this season for assessment.
The Reds added Federico Chiesa as the only signing for the current season, opting to trust the players they have. While Liverpool have enjoyed a strong season so far, some glaring gaps within the team need rectification.
The Reds are currently at the top of the Premier League table and in the Carabao Cup final. Furthermore, they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round 16 to kickstart their knockout stage campaign in Europe
Liverpool started the season by showcasing a formidable defence along with an unpredictable attack. However, they defence have conceded many goals since the latter stages of December along with some attackers losing their productivity.
Answering Sky Sports’ fans Q & A (Via YouTube), Slot highlighted the three key attributes that he seeks in a player worthy of wearing the Liverpool jersey. He said:
“It’s all about quality, of course, it’s the first thing and what is the quality, I think what I think is important for a player is that he can change directions fast, work rate and quality on the ball but yea if you don’t have the quality on the ball then you can forget playing here at Liverpool. But there are also players that have a lot of quality on the ball but if you can’t turn quickly or change directions quickly and you’re not able to run a lot then it is going to be very hard to play in the modern game and at this level.”
Slot also highlighted decision-making as another key attribute that the player should have at this level. The insight gives us an idea about players who have struggled to receive a significant game time compared to the usual starters.
Liverpool have many players with impressive quality on the ball but they cannot move and turn quickly. As a collective unit, Slot emphasizes maintaining the balance and control in possession, finding a cohesion between the risk and reward factors.
