Young midfielder Isaac Moran has decided to leave Liverpool to join Newcastle, in a move he ‘believes is best’ for his career.
With the under-18s struggling for form, coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson made the decision to promote 16-year-old Moran from the under-16s for the final stages of the U18 Premier League.
He started the campaign’s last three matches for the under-18s and attracted attention from academy-watchers in doing so.
Despite the promising performances, the former England youth captain, who is represented by Tyler Alexander-Arnold’s PLG Agency, has now left Liverpool after turning down a scholarship contract.
On Instagram, Moran wrote: “I have made the tough decision to leave Liverpool Football Club.
“I want it to be known that this decision was not taken lightly and I have been honoured to represent the club, but I believe it’s best for my career and future opportunities to go elsewhere.
“I would like to thank all of my teammates, coaches and staff for all their hard work over these past 10 years, in not only shaping me to be the footballer I am, but most importantly the person I am today.
“From the bottom of my heart. Thank you. YNWA.”
Alongside the words, Moran posted photos of himself in various Liverpool strips, ranging from when he was a child right up to when he was a ballboy at Anfield for April’s title-clincher against Tottenham.
A summer of change at the academy
Over the summer, under-18s manager Bridge-Wilkinson and under-23s coach Barry Lewtas both left Liverpool as part of an overhaul.
Bridge-Wilkinson, who has left to become an assistant manager at Huddersfield, has been replaced by Simon Wiles.
He arrives alongside former Wales boss Rob Page, who is taking Lewtas’ job as under-23 manager.
Wiles has made the move after less than a year at Man United, having led their under-14s and under-15s last season after joining from Salford City.
The 40-year-old, who has been coaching for over a decade, has senior experience from first-team coach roles at Fleetwood Town and Salford City, where he sat in the dugout on an interim basis for both clubs.
Wiles will work alongside new assistant Anthony Ryan, who has been promoted from the under-15s staff.
