Lio Tipton Dishes on James Franco’s Unreleased Movies

Oscar-nominated actor and filmmaker James Franco is making somewhat of a return to the spotlight with a few “comeback” films in the works, following a period away from the public eye once his image became shrouded in controversy in recent years. Before any allegations against him surfaced, Franco was busy directing and starring in his own movies, including one that has yet to be released. MovieWeb recently caught up with Lio Tipton, one of the stars of Franco’s shelved film The Long Home, and the famed performer weighed in on whether they think it should ever be released.

“That’s a tricky one. I actually have never seen the the cut,” Tipton told us. “I did that film right after I did In Dubious Battle, which was a really wonderful experience. And again, you know, James Franco brought an incredible cast together, and I know that there’s a lot that surrounds [The Long Home] that I have no idea how to speak on, honestly. I hope that the filmmakers that were involved, the crew, get to somehow feel like the work they did was celebrated. And after that, you know, there’s a lot of red tape around it, so we’ll see.”

Movie buffs will also recognize Tipton from the iconic rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love. It’s hard to believe the star-studded movie (also with Steve Carell, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, and Julianne Moore) was released almost 15 years ago. “I think about that movie all the time, honestly, because it was so impactful in my life and my career,” said Tipton. “I think I went into that film really knowing nothing about acting or about truly how professional actors worked. And witnessing their kindness and their dedication basically shaped and made and built the infrastructure for my career today.” They continued:

“So that movie comes up a lot in my thoughts. And kind of like every project, it’s unique when it happens, and then it’s done. And now, whenever I see anyone from that family, it’s a really exciting reunion because I think that all of us kind of felt like — no one really realized that it would become so special and significant to so many people, and that’s a bonding experience.”

Lio Tipton, Filmmaker

Tipton has also spoken in the past about how they dreamed of being a filmmaker before acting came into the picture — you can see them steal scenes in the new action-romance movie Love Hurts alongside Ke Huy Quan and other big names, for example. Tipton assured us that their filmmaking dream is still very much in the picture:

“I have written a few things. And I think the business way of saying it is, you know, they’re in the process. Everything’s in the process. But I don’t think that I would honestly be able to be in this business and stay sane if I didn’t have the drive of wanting to be a filmmaker myself. It really grounds my ambition. And I think acting can be so unstable… It’s not a natural thing… when you go on to set and then you don’t know if you’re going to get another job for years. You just can’t guarantee it.”

“And what really keeps me, I think, motivated is knowing that I’ve always come out here for one thing,” continued Tipton as to their directorial pursuits. “And that is still happening, which allows me to be adrift in other places.” From Universal Pictures, Love Hurts is now playing in theaters.
