Lilo & Stitch’s Box Office Just Passed A 93% Disney Classic (But It Will Never Catch Up To The Remake)

Lilo & Stitch’s Box Office Just Passed A 93% Disney Classic (But It Will Never Catch Up To The Remake)

Lilo & Stitch has been one of the most successful movies of the year, and has passed a lot of iconic animated Disney movies, as well as their live-action remakes, at the box office. The Lilo & Stitch animated movie is considered a modern classic, and also stemmed a successful series, so anticipation was high for the live-action remake.

Thankfully, reviews for the live-action Lilo & Stitch movie are quite good, with Screen Rant’s own Mary Kassel giving it a score of 7 out of 10. Beyond critical reviews, though, the movie has been a massive box office success. As of this writing, Lilo & Stitch has made $994 million at the worldwide box office (via The Numbers).

This impressive box office haul makes it one of the most successful live-action Disney remakes ever. Before Lilo & Stitch leaves theaters, it will cross the $1 billion milestone, and will definitely be remembered as one of the most successful movies of this year. However, while Lilo & Stitch just passed an iconic animated Disney film from 1994, there’s no chance it will surpass its wildly successful live-action remake.

But Even $1B Won’t Take Down Its CGI Remake

Without a doubt, The Lion King is one of the most popular animated movies of all time. Thanks to its original theatrical run in 1994 and several re-releases, it has managed to make a total of $988 million globally (via The Numbers). However, by consistently dominating the box office throughout the first half of the summer, the new Lilo & Stitch movie has managed to surpass The Lion King.

This is very impressive, especially considering Lilo & Stitch has had some major competition at the box office in recent weeks, such as How to Train Your Dragon, Jurassic World Rebirth, and Superman. Because of this impressive performance at the box office, a sequel to Lilo & Stitch has been officially confirmed, and will likely also be a major hit.

Lilo & Stitch’s live-action remake has completely updated the meaning of Ohana, even if the overall sentiment is still relatively the same.

However, even though Lilo & Stitch has been one of the most popular movies of the year and managed to pass The Lion King’s total haul, there’s no chance that it will dethrone the king of Disney’s live-action remakes. Currently, 2019’s The Lion King, which is a CGI remake of the original movie, is Disney’s most successful live-action remake.

In total, The Lion King remake made $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. The success of this remake proved just how influential the original animated movie is and also paved the way for last year’s Mufasa: The Lion King, which was also a notable box office success.

Since Lilo & Stitch will likely arrive on digital sometime this month, it will probably close out its theatrical run at just over $1 billion. Even though it won’t make close to The Lion King’s total haul, Lilo & Stitch has still been a massive success and will likely remain one of Disney’s highest-grossing live-action remakes for many years.
