Live-action Lilo & Stitch star Maia Kealoha explains how she acted opposite a CGI Stich in the upcoming Disney film. Serving as a remake of the 2002 animated movie of the same name, Lilo & Stitch tells the story of the bond that forms between a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo (Kealoha) and a mischievous alien creature hiding out on Earth from the aliens pursuing him. Chris Sanders returns to Voice Stitch after voicing the character in the original, with the rest of the cast including Sydney Agudong, Hannah Waddingham, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, and Tia Carrere.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly at the Moana 2 world premiere in Hawaii, Kealoha speaks about how she handled acting against a CGI Stitch in Lilo & Stitch. According to the young actor, being able to use her imagination on set was crucial. Check out her adorable comment below:
“I would have to say you have to be a big imaginator to realize, like, oh, maybe I should pretend that he is real so that I can be, like, ‘Yeah, I got this, I got this.’
“So I’m gonna get another movie, and maybe there’s going to be a donkey talking. We’re going to be like, ‘Uh, that’s not real.’ And you gotta be, like, you gotta imaginate it.”

Will The Upcoming Remake Avoid A Snow White Problem?
Marketing materials and the first video teaser for the Lilo & Stitch remake have all been leaning heavily onto Stitch’s impish personality. Stitch was a great source of humor in the original, and it’s likely that he will be in the remake too. Not all of Disney’s live-action remakes, however, have managed to recapture the magic of elements of the animated originals.

Since Lilo & Stitch’s release in 2002, the iconic Disney franchise has spawned several other films and TV shows, so there’s plenty of Stitch to enjoy.
A perfect example of this is the response to the seven dwarves in Disney’s upcoming Snow White remake. These CGI characters don’t look like the dwarves of the animated original, and the change has been met with a very mixed reaction. That being said, Stitch’s visual design in the remake being relatively faithful to the original, combined with Sanders returning to provide the character’s voice, would suggest that Lilo & Stitch may avoid Snow White‘s divisiveness.

Recapturing The Magic Of Animation Is No Easy Task
Animation is very different from live-action when it comes to creating an atmosphere and a language with which to tell a story. The animation style of the original Lilo & Stitch, which includes color choices and character designs, is a big part of that film’s appeal. As has been seen with previous Disney live-action remakes, putting these animated stories into a more “real” world changes a fundamental part of how those originals are remembered and why they worked in the first place, which is a risk.
It’s too early to say how the Lilo & Stitch remake will fare compared to past remakes in terms of its quality, but getting Stitch himself right will be crucial. From what’s been released thus far, the character certainly appears to be just like the one in the original movie, which is a positive sign. A full-length trailer will hopefully be released in the near future, providing a better idea of just how Lilo & Stitch will translate to live-action.
