Lazio plan 2032 opening of new €480m Stadio Flaminio

Lazio plan 2032 opening of new €480m Stadio Flaminio

February 18 – The proposed overhaul of Lazio’s Stadio Flaminio will carry a projected price tag of €480 million, with ambitions for the ground to stage its first fixture in 2032.

Claudio Lotito, president of SS Lazio, presented the plans last week, setting out a redevelopment that would more than double the stadium’s current 20,000 capacity to 50,750.

“It’s not just a construction project, it’s a vision,” Lotito said.

“The redevelopment of the Stadio Flaminio isn’t just about SS Lazio. It’s about Rome, its urban history, and its ability to look to the future with responsibility.”

At the heart of the proposal is a suspended second tier that would effectively wrap around the original structure without altering it. Built for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the stadium has stood largely dormant since 2011 and requires substantial restoration.

The blueprint includes refurbishing damaged sections of the existing bowl, while protecting and modernising interior amenities such as the gym, swimming pool and boxing ring – elements that form part of the venue’s historic footprint.

The project extends further still – plans call for a newly created green belt around the site, additional tree planting, and the installation of 57,000 square metres of sound-absorbing material along external walkways to reduce disruption for residents.

Situated roughly three kilometres northwest of Rome’s centre, the stadium is viewed by Lotito as a catalyst for wider regeneration. Of the total investment, €150 million has been earmarked for improving the surrounding neighbourhood.

“[It will improve] a currently degraded area, bringing greenery, sustainable mobility, urban quality, and giving Lazio a home consistent with its history,” he said.

Lazio are targeting the first half of next year to secure all the required approvals, with construction scheduled for completion by 2031 – a timeline that would allow the venue to be considered as a candidate host stadium for UEFA Euro 2032, set to be co-hosted between Italy and Turkey.

Architect Marco Casamonti of Archea Studio has insisted that the designs comply with Rome’s planning regulations and include a detailed mobility strategy, with access and transport still among the key hurdles for the development.

“With this stadium project, we want to make Lazio immortal,” Lotito finished.
