Kraven the Hunter is finally in theaters, and fans are desperate to see if Sony’s final Spider-Man villain standalone project was worth the wait. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular character, with the film exploring Kraven’s origins. But, for a cinematic universe centered around Spider-Man’s foes, the web-slinger is nowhere to be found. Kraven the Hunter star, Ariana DeBose, is desperate to right that wrong, and hopes that Sony and Marvel Studios will one day “give the fans what they want!”
Speaking to Variety at Kraven the Hunter‘s world premiere in New York, DeBose begged Marvel Studios and Sony to set aside their corporate competition, and finally unite Spider-Man with his most popular villains. “This is meant to be a standalone film and an origin story, but I do think Kraven deserves that epic showdown with Spider-Man,” the actress said. DeBose plays Calypso Ezili in Kraven the Hunter. In the comics, Calypso is a voodoo priestess and a close ally to Kraven. It is unclear how much of her powers will be shown in the movie, as Rhino (Alessandro Nivola) is the film’s main villain. But DeBose doesn’t mind if Calypso has to give way for that fight to happen. She continued:
“There’s literally a whole comic about it. Give the people what they want. I think they should do that. And if there’s space for Calypso and Kraven’s journey, then great!”
Taylor-Johnson is also game for Kraven the Hunter to take on Spider-Man in the MCU. The actor revealed that he’s already met Tom Holland, after watching his performance in Romeo & Juliet in London. “The last time I spoke to Tom was backstage of his theater production, Romeo and Juliet, and I gotta tell you, he was fantastic,” Taylor-Johnson said. The actor didn’t reveal any specific details about their conversation, only that he’d “be happy to work with him any day.”
Kraven the Hunter Nearly Appeared in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’
Casual superhero fans might be confused about Kraven the Hunter‘s connection to the MCU. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe exists parallel to the MCU. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man exists within the same multiverse, as the franchise has previously referenced some of his MCU antics. However, the characters will never cross over on the big screen until Sony and Marvel Studios work out a new rights deal for the characters.

The delays to ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ left Sony in a position to make ‘Kraven the Hunter’ their underperforming 2024 holiday release
That being said, Kraven the Hunter could have appeared in the MCU already. Speaking to Collider back in 2021, Tom Holland revealed Kraven was once considered to be the main antagonist for his third outing as the web-slinger in the MCU, before it was changed to a multiverse story. “For a long time, there was going to be a Kraven movie that was going to be the third movie because things weren’t working out and all sorts of different stuff,” Holland explained. “Jon [Watts] pitched me this Kraven movie, which actually was really cool. I don’t want to talk about it in case that movie ends up happening down the line, but it was fun.”
Before Kraven the Hunter gets to fight with Spider-Man in the MCU, he first has to contend with film critics and audiences. The film currently sits at an abysmal 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score currently sits much higher at 69%. But, as this is the first day of Kraven‘s release, expect the Popcornmeter to fluctuate a lot over the coming weeks.
