Kluivert leaves Indonesia after losing final 2026 group qualifiers

October 17 – Patrick Kluivert and Indonesia have parted ways after the Dutch manager failed to qualify the national team to the 2026 World Cup.

Last weekend, Iraq dumped Indonesia out of World Cup contention with a 1-0 victory and the elimination prompted the Indonesian FA (PSSI) to remove Kluivert, who had arrived in January.

On Thursday, the PSSI released a statement saying: “The termination of this collaboration [between PSSI and the national team’s coaching staff] was based on mutual consent, taking into account internal dynamics and the strategic direction of the national team’s future development.

”With the end of this collaboration, the coaching team will no longer manage the Indonesian national team at senior, U23, or U20 levels.

“PSSI expresses its appreciation for the contributions of all members of the coaching team during their tenure. This step was taken as part of a comprehensive evaluation of the national football coaching and development programme.”

Kluivert succeeded Shin Tae-Yong and the 49-year-old won three of his games in charge, losing four and drawing one.

On Instagram, Kluivert wrote: “Even though I’m deeply disappointed and sorry for the fact that we didn’t make it to the World Cup, I’ll always be proud of what we built together.

“The defeats against Saudi Arabia and Iraq were bitter lessons, but also reminders of how high our shared dreams are. As head coach, I take full responsibility.”

He previously had managerial roles at Adana Demirspor in Turkey and Curacao. Kluivert served as assistant to Louis van Gaal from 2012 to 2014.
